Where to buy paracetamol in suspension?

Hello - please can someone can help me with a recommendation for a good pet medication website/shop?

Our vet has prescribed paracetamol suspension 250mg/5ml for our arthritic terrier. She has given us the prescription note with the advice that we can buy it more cheaply elsewhere than getting it from the vets' surgery.
All I can find in my local shops is strawberry flavoured liquid - I've checked, and the vet says we shouldn't give this.
I've looked online to no avail - the one place I found it unflavoured, it was out of stock.
Does anyone have any ideas please? Many thanks in advance 🐶

Does it have to be in suspension. Our vet told us to give half a paracetamol. I used to coat it with a little peanut butter (so it couldn’t be licked off) and dog took it no problem

CatsorDogsrule · 18/11/2025 16:45

What dose was prescribed? As pp said, you may be able to give in tablet form instead, but would depend on the dose.

Does your dog take tablets well?

My girl (30kg!) takes three half tablets of human paracetamol per day. Costs me pennies.

If you have to have buy the prescriptions, I have used AniMed and Vet UK before as I get her Metacam that way for about 1/4 the price I would from the vet.

Yes per 5ml but a small dog may only need 1ml for example.

SpanielsGalore · 18/11/2025 18:09

Can the local pharmacy order it in for you?

Or as others have said, can you give it in tablet form? My 17kg dog has 3/4 of a tablet three times a day. I give it wrapped in ham.

ihavespoken · 19/11/2025 07:17

Thanks everyone. I’ll ask the vet if we can give him it in tablet form as this would be much easier. Failing that I’ll check out the websites mentioned and see if the pharmacy can get it.
thankyou!

@ihavespokenthats the same as children’s liquid paracetamol.. although you would need to make sure it didn’t contain the artificial sweeteners than are toxic to dogs so be careful; they may not be suitable.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 19/11/2025 07:21

Most people I know just give sugar free Calpol or own brand equivalent.

PersephoneParlormaid · 19/11/2025 07:22

The paracetamol liquid I got from my vet once smelled suspiciously like Calpol.

PersephoneParlormaid · 19/11/2025 07:23

@ihavespoken paracetamol is paracetamol whether it’s tablet or liquid. No need to ask the vet.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 19/11/2025 07:23

Be really careful with sugar free- the sweetener can be toxic. Is it xylitol? Check because I can’t remember which one is toxic. It can be in peanut butter too. You have to be careful.

WittyJadeStork · 19/11/2025 07:27

As others have said it’s the sweetener that’s toxic.
Dont mention to a pharmacist that you are buying it for animals as they won’t supply it.

Lulu1919 · 19/11/2025 07:30

Calpol ?

JH0404 · 19/11/2025 07:39

Take the prescription to a pharmacy

JH0404 · 19/11/2025 07:44

This is showing in stock at boots, pharmacies should be able to order medications for the next day if out of stock

I don’t even give my kids sugar free. Never mind my much more precious dog! Grin

I have taken a prescription from my vet to the pharmacy before. They were quite happy to dispense the tablets for my dog. The label was even printed in his name.

poshme · 19/11/2025 09:35

In case it’s helpful- My dog won’t take paracetamol tablets - she spits them out. But she will take the coated capsule ones. She’s doesn’t seem to notice that they’re bright red & white.

PodMom · 19/11/2025 09:45

My vet said to give calpol as it’s cheaper but freaked me out telling me I had to avoid a certain one and I can’t remember which so I just buy metcam.

why are people here saying they give sugar free? Won’t that have xylitol in it. Don’t you need the sugar version?

WinterNightStars · 19/11/2025 10:08

We use Vet UK for Metacam, hugely cheaper than buying from our vet.

ihavespoken · 19/11/2025 10:32

Thanks again everyone - Metacam made him sick so he has to have paracetamol.
I didn't know whether tablets would end up being the right concentration or how I would work out how many to give for his bodyweight but I'll check with the vet.
Thanks for linking to boots - the only children's paracetamol I've found is the flavoured one which the vet says he's not allowed. I will go to an actual decent sized pharmacy (most likely Boots) and ask for the plain kind.

thanks again everyone!

How many mls of the suspension are you supposed to dose?

I wrap the tablet in 1/3 slice plastic cheese and fling it to her. She downs it in one, no chewing 😂

Does your dog do that with anything? A piece of ham maybe? For that, I throw a plain piece of ham (a few cm squared size) a few times then the wrapped piece, then a plain piece again.
