Border terrier almost a year old … suggestions for food to move him on to?

Just that really. He’s currently on Eukanuba puppy and that’s working well although their next stage up is Junior but they only do a large breed product. He’s little for his age (just under 6.5kg).

Im after something dry, decent enough quality but not going to break the bank.

Also we have very limited storage so nothing that comes higher than 12 kilos 😀

Puppy tax attached - thanks in advance folks!

I've found Ava very good. Good quality but not quite as expensive as some of the others.

Either Millie’s Wolfheart if budget allows or Skinners Field and Trial

Thanks both - I’ll check those out. Have also been cross checking with the All About Dogs website for nutrition vs cost too

Hes beautiful! My westie is 1.5 years and I feed him millies. He does really well on it. Loves the salmon one and it keeps his coat nice (he wasn't keen on the lower fat one)

Mamamia35 · 14/11/2025 12:51

He’s a beauty. Try Zooplus for food.

My cockers are on Country Kibble. It might be a 15 kg bag though. It all fits in a plastic storage bin.

I think Jollyes Lifestage is the same quality and cheaper. But it depends where you live as to whether or not you can source it. P&P to North Scotland makes it too expensive for me.

After a year, Border Terriers are mostly full grown and can go onto adult versions of food. Large breeds have a junior variety as they take much longer to grow.
My BT is earing Wainwrights quite happily, but she has a sensitive stomach, so is on grain free food.

I've recently discovered Laughing Dog ( available on line from their website ) which looks good and is baked rather than extruded. I've seen it recommended by a BT owner who runs the CECS group.
Whatever you decide on, buy the smallest bag you can get through in a reasonable time, and keep it in the original bag to preserve condition and nutritional content.

Ahhh what a beauty, they are such lovely looking dogs, aren’t they?!

Thanks that’s helpful to know, I’ll definitely look those up

If yours is working well it’s time to just move on to the adult version which is 1+ in most dog foods. As a pp said junior is specific to large breeds due to their longer growing time and differing needs compared to smaller dogs

Abc1weabc1 · 14/11/2025 21:41

Wolfworthy or eden. High quality foods so only small quantities needed.

Here for the gorgeous pics. I still miss my old boy. He died in 2019. He was wonderful.

When he would eat dry food ( he was a huge fusspot) he had Royal Canin I think.

Mine eat Omni kibble with a spoonful of forthglade meat (but Aldi’s own brand- it’s obviously made by forthglade). Picture for tax

My 3 year old border is on Millie’s Wolfheart 70:30 range with butchers wet as a topper. She has about 80 g a day and I buy the 5 Kg bags and rotate around the range as advised. As you can see she’s doing well on it 😀 Twice a week she also has a natural treat like ears or necks and lots of training treats as she does obedience and agility.

Her weight is perfect (6.4 Kg).

With a terrier they need so little there is really no reason to go cheap. A 5 Kg bag costs £32 ish depending on protein source and lasts 4 months. Wet is £1 a tin and a tin does 8 meals as a topper. You honestly get out what you put in with a dog diet wise but that said the best diet is the one that suits them. Weight maintenance is one of the most important things you can do for your dog. They live so much healthier happy lives if they stay slim.

Mumteedum · 15/11/2025 19:36

Love all the photos. 🥰

They are just the best dogs. I'd dearly love another one day if I am well enough.

That advice is very helpful, thank you x
