Does Anyone Else think Small Dogs Are Half Dog, Half Cat (lighthearted)

I'm the owner (servant) of a small fluffy dog. I've been working for him for 12 years now. I love the cat posts on here (never had a cat but starting to think my next pet might be one). The more I read about the cats the more I think small fluffy dogs are half dog, half cat.

I mean my dog certainly acts like furry royalty is horribly spoilt and incredibly bossy if he does not get his own way. He also can pull the funniest expressions. Totally distain as if saying the word 'peasant' at me with a sniff. Arrogant little walk like he's much taller than he is, assumes everyone wants to say hello to him.

He's also not much of a cuddler. If I try to get a cuddle he'll look at me like 'loser' or 'without a treat, I don't think so'.

I love reading how cats are so snooty and treat their owners like servants etc but I can't help feeling that small fluffy dogs are somewhat similar.

Does anyone else agree?

P.S. Actually this includes small dogs that are not fluffy too like Chihuahuas.

P.P.S. Bonus points if you post a picture of your wee darling.

Here he is looking outraged that I've clearly not attended to one of his many needs yet today.

I have a greyhound. Definitely a cat in a dog suit.

My small fluffy dog appears to be part lamb he springs and jumps like one when he’s happy 😊
yours is gorgeous.

That is so adorable when they do that. I'm going to need a picture though! (any excuse to see other people's dogs)

He is very cute BUT I would say that dogs of any size need to be treated and trained like dogs
I know this is lighthearted but too many owners don't properly train their small dogs and treat them like fashion accessories - I once met a Yorkie in a denim skirt and pink hoodie
I am sure yours is well trained OP but a lot of small dog owners (owners of small dogs not small people who own dogs) think the bad behaviour is cute

rurbane · 13/11/2025 10:44

Yes, my small dog is part cat. The way she curls up into a ball in small spaces. She'll let me know I'm the best person ever if I make a fuss of her then dismiss me when someone new comes into the room. She glares at me if I have the cheek to stop fussing her. Her prissy little trot which says 'I'm better than all of you'

He actually went to puppy training classes when young to learn all his commands and I did lots of training with him at home too.

It all went really well till he hit the 'teenage years' then became a little furry monster who started ignoring me.

Now that he is older he actually is pretty well behaved outsided and will 9/10 respond immediately to 'wait' (he does have some dogs that he seems to take great umbrage to).

Most of his 'monster' behaviour is in the house as he knows I cater to him.

I have to say though he has always been a good sleeper and if it's lights out in the bedroom he's know to go to sleep or at least not annoy me.

Have started putting down puppy pads in the house again now that he is getting older and having more accidents and so now any day that's rainy is an indoor day as far as he is concerned. Tried to get him out today several times for a walk or in the garden but no - happy to pee on his mat though!

I do agree badly behaved dogs in public are not funny. The thread is very much lighthearted! Do you have a dog? Picture please

My small dog is part cat when indoors. Would basically like to live on my knee and lick my face all day but the moment i do something he doesn't like he's furious.
Outside he's an antelope - running for miles!

He's a darling and very much a well trained dog in case the usual small dog hating people come on this light hearted thread.

Oh I LOVE the prissy little trot they do and I know just what you mean. There is a little girl Lhaso Apso near us and she is always beautifully groomed. She has the little arrogant wiggle down to a T.

I actually reckon she could teach my little monster I thing or two about 'training staff'

Anyway you know the rules - we need a picture. Bonus points if you can capture the prissy little trot/wiggle or a picture of her being dismissive (they are good at that!)

Ha ha yes they can pull quite the 'outraged' expression can't they.

Mine does like a good run outside still although less than when he was younger and would bolt off at a speed I could never catch him at.

We're going need a picture of the wee darling on his throne (your knee?)

DDog is medium rather than small. She eats anything and everything, but has criteria for where she sleeps... NOT on the floor, even in a dog bed. She is a street rat who turned up with bare elbows from sleeping on concrete. These days she was VERY offended at being expected, on a camping holiday, to have a mere blanket on the ground.

She sighed a lot. She gave me reproachful glances. She turned round and round as if to curl.up, them stopped and stared sadly into space.

I woke up.in the night and she had wriggled onto my sleeping mat and under the sleeping bag.

The only analogy I can find is the Princess and the Pea. She is the Princess.

Snippit · 13/11/2025 11:04

This is little Bertie, or as we call him Dirty Bertie. We have him chemically castrated as he has taken a liking to humping our Labrador. He’s very demanding, and constantly wants to get onto your knee, he’s so adorable, cheeky little chappie.

Oh the side-eye from my little one. We often say she's more like a cat.

EmeraldDreams73 · 13/11/2025 11:23

My small fluffy one is such a lapdog, leaps onto anyone who sits down. I'm not a cat fan at ALL, so I'd say she's not remotely cat-like! She's absolutely queen of this castle because we all adore her, but is extremely well behaved, friendly, contented and not a yappy, grumpy or aloof dog at all. She's 10 now but looks much younger. She is of course the best girl in the world, normally fluffier but recently groomed (hence the bow on her collar!).

Giant breed dogs are far more cat like. They're very calm and love loafing about the house. They also have the dignified snootiness of a cat. I have both btw and they get along amazingly well.

Yours sounds lovely and when I see how "portable" some dogs are I do think a smallr one might be nice.

Ha, ha I understand the princess and the pea analogy very well.

Street dog - was she from abroad then or just a stray in the UK? I do feel sad thinking about this so I can't blame her for enjoying the finer things in life now. So glad she is enjoying her life now with you and being well looked after. As for just offering her a blanket to sleep on - are you insane? You will reported to the rspca one of these days for unacceptable treatment of furry royalty.

When mine gets his dinner he sits on one of his designated seats and sniffs the air to see if what I have prepared for him is worthy of his time. Dog food produces an arrogant sniff and an expression of 'what's that muck you're trying to feed me'. Occasionally something passes muster (usually fillet steak and the like) and then I get a 'finally something decent for my dinner' look.

Fresh tuna steak from last night is sitting in fridge untouched. Last time he like it. This time he has decided it's not for him. I might put it in the garden and see if some cat can come and enjoy it.

I like that ' cat software in dog hardware'. Makes perfect sense although I have to admit I was attributing this to small dogs. I had no idea larger dogs behaved like this.

Oh so beautiful. Male or female? It is a lhaso or something similar. I can't quite tell from the pics.

Yes mine does this stretch do. I always say to him 'Are you doing your Doga' (yoga) when he starts doing the stretching and preening.
