Does Anyone Else think Small Dogs Are Half Dog, Half Cat (lighthearted)

I'm the owner (servant) of a small fluffy dog. I've been working for him for 12 years now. I love the cat posts on here (never had a cat but starting to think my next pet might be one). The more I read about the cats the more I think small fluffy dogs are half dog, half cat.

I mean my dog certainly acts like furry royalty is horribly spoilt and incredibly bossy if he does not get his own way. He also can pull the funniest expressions. Totally distain as if saying the word 'peasant' at me with a sniff. Arrogant little walk like he's much taller than he is, assumes everyone wants to say hello to him.

He's also not much of a cuddler. If I try to get a cuddle he'll look at me like 'loser' or 'without a treat, I don't think so'.

I love reading how cats are so snooty and treat their owners like servants etc but I can't help feeling that small fluffy dogs are somewhat similar.

Does anyone else agree?

P.S. Actually this includes small dogs that are not fluffy too like Chihuahuas.

P.P.S. Bonus points if you post a picture of your wee darling.

Oh the side-eye from my little one. We often say she's more like a cat.

is it accompanied by an arrogant sniff of distain? 😀

My small fluffy one is such a lapdog, leaps onto anyone who sits down. I'm not a cat fan at ALL, so I'd say she's not remotely cat-like! She's absolutely queen of this castle because we all adore her, but is extremely well behaved, friendly, contented and not a yappy, grumpy or aloof dog at all. She's 10 now but looks much younger. She is of course the best girl in the world, normally fluffier but recently groomed (hence the bow on her collar!).

Oh she looks amazing and such beautiful big eyes. So glad to hear she is queen of the castle and adored by all. Just the way it should be of course.

Thanks for sharing her picture with us all.

Giant breed dogs are far more cat like. They're very calm and love loafing about the house. They also have the dignified snootiness of a cat. I have both btw and they get along amazingly well.

I've never owned a giant dog breed so this is new and interesting info for me. My sister in law owned a lab and he was very 'dog' like - friendly, goofy and very food orientated. Didn't seem the brightest cookie but very sweet.

Yes the dignified snootiness of a cat - that's it exactly.

Who is the boss out of the big one and small one then? Any chance of a picture? (I'm assuming it's a cat and dog btw)

I have a large dog but no photos as might be outing, sorry
Yours sounds lovely and when I see how "portable" some dogs are I do think a smallr one might be nice.

No problem. I understand re being outing. I've name changed for this post so if anyone recognises my dog, they won't be able to identify my other posts.

Yes small dogs are very portable although mine is surprisingly heavy.

He had both cruciate ligaments done when he was a youngster and I lived in a top floor flat at the time with no lift. I was so thankful that he was small enough to carry downstairs or goodness knows what I would have done.

Funnily enough, when we got our dog (medium sized terrier) I was amazed how cat like he was and called him my cat dog.

I grew up with cats and had never had a dog before. Now I think he's more of a grumpy old man that either cat or dog

Oh so beautiful. Male or female? It is a lhaso or something similar. I can't quite tell from the pics.

Yes mine does this stretch do. I always say to him 'Are you doing your Doga' (yoga) when he starts doing the stretching and preening.

Havanese female. Not keen on long walks but likes mooching about in the garden.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 13/11/2025 14:34

The cat is the boss, always. We've had a multi dog, multi cat household for many years, the dogs very much respect the cats. The giant livestock guarding dogs are quite different from a medium dog like a Lab, they're very much calmer and less food focused, they'll even refuse treats from people, which is quite amusing because most dogs love a treat. They're highly intelligent but free spirits; like with a cat, you cannot be the master of these dogs. That's not to say they're badly behaved - they aren't, but they're independent and aloof like a cat is. They won't fawn all over you and hang on your every word.
I didn't nc but I only hang out on The Doghouse, so what the heck.

My greyhound says 'yes they are' as he gets terrorised both by cats and small dogs and is terrified of both. He however is very cat like and spends many a day curled up like a cat and snoozing.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 13/11/2025 14:42

Ddog1 is 3 so she had two years of being brought up by my cats before we had a other dog in the house
She sleeps on the back of the sofa with them
Sometimes still trys to hop up on the same surfaces they go on even though she knows she's not allowed
Cuddles up with them and wrestles with the younger cat she's so careful not to hurt him while the cat chews her leg
Her attitude is exactly like a cat In the house
Thankfully out of the house she just acts like a dog and is very well trained

Goodness what a beautiful (and very large!) dog.

He does look quite regal!

I always think it's really funny when the tiny little animal (the cat in this case) is the boss.

Thanks for posting the picture. I love looking at other people's dog (and more recently cats)

Unfortunately, some (many) of the small dogs around here are also part XL bully. They may be part-feline when at home, but some are quite aggressive when out. Only yesterday one was jumping and growling at me.

Small dogs can absolutely be aggressive if not socialised properly when puppies. I've met quite a few who were aggressive.

However alot of the aggression comes from being mistreated by people which is heartbreaking of course.

I get upset when I see a small dog being aggressive because I know something bad has likely happened to them in their life that has made them that way.

It's a fair point though.

gosh. I wonder if there are lots of dog bought in lockdown by people who weren't able to socialise them with other dogs.

However the thread was meant to be lighthearted and funny rather than focusing on things we don't like about some dogs so..........

I think you at least owe us a picture of your cutie pie! (please)

My dogs when I was a
Child were Yorkshire terriers - they were hilarious chasing our cat through our bungalow, they’d charge from one end to the other and the cat would turn on her heels and jump over them to do the 100m dash the other way … all very friendly and cute (not nasty lol!) … alarmingly that was over 40 years ago 😳😵👀

Unfortunately, the ones I see haven’t been poorly trained. A lot of ‘gentle parenting’ from the owners.

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 19/11/2025 11:24

My giant breed must be a panther then!

Stretches like a cat.
Grooms himself like a cat.
Sits (squashes) on my lap and murmurs (purrs) for attention.
Fusses about fresh water in his bowl (but will drink from muddy puddles when out)
Scratches to get his bedding cushions 'just right'
Attention seeking most of the time, unless he's not in the mood and will then sigh, stretch and strut away.
Loves swatting at toys
Sighs when told to get off the sofa
Walks round your legs, brushing up to you when you come home, waiting for attention
Bolts upright if you stop the tummy rub before he's ready but glares at you if you do it 'wrong'
Hates water
Hunts anything that gets in the garden

Definitely part panther.

LoveSandbanks · 19/11/2025 11:25

I have a 40kg bull lurcher that we rescued. He had been neglected and abused. We've had him 4 years and yesterday he shouted at me because he wanted to sit where I was sitting on the sofa.

Utterly spoilt (what's the point of rescuing if you don't spoil?) and rules the roost!

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 19/11/2025 11:27

We've had a lot of bad experiences over the years, with tiny dogs snapping and snarling at our big guys and the owners thinking it cute and funny or that their dog is "brave" for harassing a gigantic guard dog that is minding its own business. There's a pug and a dachshund locally that we cross the road to avoid because they launch themselves at our pup.

However, I appreciate that @FinallyMadeMyPeace intended this to be lighthearted, not small dogs v big dogs...

Still it's nice to see some other big ones joining the thread @Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits @LoveSandbanks

Frequency · 19/11/2025 11:37

We have many small dogs. They are all different crossbreeds.

Mama dog is a pitbull x feral cat disguised as a chihuahua. She needs to be kept close to a heat source at all times and cannot possibly get wet or dirty, and she steals the big dog's bones and toys and makes him cry.

Tiny dog is 100% feline; she also cannot get wet, cold or dirty. She is currently refusing to leave her memory foam, fleece-lined bed because it is snowing.

Papa dog is 100% demonic entity sent from the bowels of hell to torture humankind. He is also disguised as a chihuahua.

My chihuahua is not a dog at all; he is just a baby.

This is probably true, but I wouldn't judge the owners too harshly unless you know their history. We have hosted our demonic entity since he was 6 months old. We know he came from a responsible breeder who thoroughly vetted his owners, but he was returned to her twice. The first time, he was returned because he "couldn't be toilet-trained." The second time, he was returned because he was "too stupid" to be a show dog.

He has had no bad experiences with us, but he was very timid when DD first brought him home and couldn't operate independently of our first chihuahua. If they were separated for training or medical reasons, he would take himself into his cave bed and stay there until they were reunited. It took us 6 months to earn his trust; that is when he started showing his aggressive side. It's a mix of fear and aggression (towards men and other dogs - he was a lockdown dog for us, I don't know if his first two homes socialised him, but we couldn't) and guarding when his aggression is aimed at us and our other dogs.

We're working on his guarding behaviours and mostly getting there, but socialising him with men is hard, as we don't know many men, the ones we do know he already likes, but he has not yet extended that confidence to strange men. Socialising him with other dogs is very hard. Too many people let off-leash dogs run up to him without asking us, and we feel we have to pick him up when this happens, which reinforces his fear, but he does attack when other dogs get too close, too quickly, and he is small enough that a mistimed warning snap from a bigger dog defending itself would kill him. Ditto kids, he is smol and cute and looks like a teddy, so parents think nothing of letting their kids rush him without asking and again, we have to then pick him up to stop him biting.

If he likes and trusts you and you're not trying to sit on his bed aka whatever bit of furniture he is currently on he's a really loving, cuddle monster. The rest of the time, he is a prebred demon sent by the Devil himself to test us.
