Do I need to take pup back to vet?

A week ago we took our dog into the vet as he had started to lick his thigh/bum. It was found he had an infection of the anal glands. We were given a five day course of antibiotics. Took dog in for check up and the vet said it looked like things had been resolved ie no blood was visible.

My dog is not compulsively licking his behind like he was last week but he still seems interested in his bum (maybe tries to lick it once an hour?). I have to stop him physically. Which I have to say is unusual.

Should I take him back? I only ask as dog has become terrified of vets so I try to minimise taking him.

I'd personally give it a few more days if it's better than it was. He's probably just made it a bit sore from licking it loads before?
Obviously if it gets worse or doesn't get better then you should go.

If he’s still licking it, it’s bothering him, does he have a cone you can put on. My dog had blocked glands, took to vet to get them expressed, but 2/3 days later he was constantly licking between tail and top of leg, it was looking very sore, took him back to vets, who kept him in and put him under anesthetic, shaved the area and sent off cultures to check what bacteria it was. After he was shaved we could see the area he had been licking was about 3 inches round, extremely red and had been bleeding. He came home with cream to put on, steroids and paracetamol, along with a cone. It healed nicely within 3 weeks. Unfortunately it may not heal it it’s being licked.

I'd ask for a phone consultation. He maybe just needs a cone on for a bit longer.

Put a cone on him so he can’t lick it and see how he is in a few days.

Yup, we’ve kept the cone on.

Will ring the vet. Thanks all
