Hi everyone!

I’m planning on getting a puppy next year, and I’m very inclined towards a shitzu.

I’m divorced and live with 2 cats (3yo) and 2 kids (11 and 13). Kids love animals, no allergies or any other issue. Cats are very easy going and affectionate.

Can you share your experience with this breed on pros and cons so I can better prepare for it, please?

Also, pictures of your little doggies are very welcome!

TIA!!

My shih Tzu is great. He's 9 now (he was a rescue puppy) and super affectionate and friendly. The main issues we've had are allergies. He is always itchy and is on long term medication for that. He also has eye problems where they need constant cleaning and eye drops. These conditions are common with the breed and vets bills are expensive. We also pay £50 every two months to get him groomed as he really needs this as his coat grows so quickly. Other than this he's low exercise and adorable 😍

My lovely dog is a mixed of Shih Tzu and Maltese.
To be honest one reason I got her was because these breeds are meant to be low energy - she's not!! I love her to bits but she does need a lot of walking/playing. She's 5 now and still very much on the go all of the time.

She chases cats but that might have been different if she'd grown up in a house with them from the start.

Main health issues are allergies

Lovely temperament. She loves everyone she meets

Great breed.

I had one for 15 years and she sadly passed away last year, she was like my best friend and I miss her dearly.
they are easy to train but can be stubborn!
they are the loveliest most gentle dogs around children and other people.
only 2 things to think of, mine was quite anxious around other dogs and loud noises, HATED!!!! fireworks, she did also need groomed every 6-8 as her fur could become matted.
you’ll have lots of fun with your new dog and lots of love!!!

They're very sweet, but can be prone to breathing issues as they're brachycephalic. Allergies and skin issues are also common, so make sure you have good insurance and get them used to the groomers from as young as possible, as they will need regular trims and brushing.

I have two, they are chalk and cheese, but I love them dearly and they are fun little dogs, my eldest is sharp as tack but stubborn and hates other dogs with a passion apart from his two housemates, and has absolutely no recall not through the want of trying, my youngest is thick as a brick and very laid back, but both are very playful crazy monsters that love to do zoomies round the house, you need to consider grooming costs as they can be very pricey, I keep mine in an almost full coat which seems to confuse most people as to what breed they actually are, but I think they a fab breed, my two hairy creatures
