Name my pups!

What would you name these two German sheps - one with less markings is a lot more chilled and sits and watches, the one with more markings on her face is a bit more adventurous! Both bitches

Not to shit on your parade, but two puppies at the same time and both bitches is a terrible idea! Who sold you these dogs?!

Glitchymn1 · 08/11/2025 09:26

Kira and Nova …. but two pups form same litter can cause problems. When we were sourcing a pup, (we had a WhatsApp group) one couple wanted two pups and the breeder said absolutely not.

Sadly agree. I would seriously think about whether or not you should continue with both.

I would never have littermates (or any close in age young dogs) and definitely not two bitches.

GSD are loyal dogs that form strong bonds with owners it would be exceptionally difficult to meet the needs of two puppies.

I have to believe that you are not experienced enough to meet the needs, because anyone experienced enough wouldn't take it on.

SpanielsGalore · 08/11/2025 09:50

I had littermates once. They were my first dogs and I knew no better and didn't have the internet for research back then. It was very hard work. I spent up to four hours a day walking and training them separately.

They got on as puppies, but had a few scraps once adolescence hit. I think this is quite common and I hear bitches are worse than males if they do fight. And GSDs are a lot bigger and stronger than spaniels.

Things settled down after adolescence and they lived to be 14 years old. But they tolerated each other rather than liked each other. So my romanticised image of having two dogs that played and snuggled up together never worked out.

Unless you are getting the puppies to train for working roles, then I would strongly advise against getting two as pets. I would never do it again.

Not to shit on all your parades but I've asked for names only not unsolicited advice when none of you know the continuing circumstances of the housing of the pups nor my own ability/history with owning any animal! :)

Your ability or history owning any animal is mostly irrelevant tbh. I breed Goldies - have done for over twenty years - and would never keep two dogs from a litter, or sell them. And as PP said, they are equally experienced and would not do this. Anyone who thinks they can is arrogant and foolish...a poor combination for dog ownership.

Even the most experienced of dog owners and trainers would struggle with two puppies, let alone GSDs.

And if one of the puppies is being given up, as you imply, better sooner rather than later tbh.

But as you wanted names: 'Bad' 'Idea' would be perfect

I knew everyone would come and shit all over OP.

She hasn't even said they're hers, or that she's keeping them both - but of course, The Doghouse assumes the worst and has to be nasty.

I love Nera for a sheperd-y type dog. Or Lyra.

They're gorgeous, OP!

I assume you are landed gentry and can place one with the head groom and the other with the head gardner. Then take them out separately for walking & training.

So, how about Rosie and Petal?

Well the title is 'Name My Pups', so excuse me for assuming that meant the pups belonged to the OP.

She could be the breeder, or they could be being fostered, or in kennels.

MN always assumes the worst about posters on The Doghouse, it's so bloody depressing and predictable.

A rescue wouldn't let anyone foster two puppies from the same litter, for all the reasons people have outlined above. Even the RSPCA frown on that, and they're about the worst rescue out there (Last Chance may be slightly worse...). And ditto a kennels. If she is the breeder, then that's obviously fine although I'm not sure a breeder would name a dog they don't intend to keep.

And tbh, after the last few days have shown, when we assume the worst we are usually right...

She could be fostering mum and pups?

Whether you're "right" or not, OP didn't ask for advice, she asked for dog names. Why can't people just scroll on instead of leaping on to give unwanted and unasked for "advice"?

Puppies that size (GSDs - clearly very close, or already, past 8 weeks) should be fostered separately.

And our unwanted advice has helped others - several people have comes to MN over the last year or so with for some frankly odd ideas, and with a bit of honest advice/experience, they've avoided making some truly spectacularly bad decisions and are happier for it (as they admit themselves!). If OP is as experienced as she implies she is, this will be water off a ducks back - but it might help others.

But you're right. She asked for dogs names. And she got them: "Bad" "Idea"😊

Surely someone as experienced as OP implies she is, as PP have said, would have known the reaction posting this would have gained (I.e the fair assumption they would be litter mates or similar) and would have made the point it wasn’t to avoid concerning people?

Why should she have to? It was meant to be a cute post asking for names for two puppies - not one that means everyone has to know every single detail of her background before they "approve" of it it Hmm

This forum gets worse and worse by the day, I swear. It reminds me why I would never dream of posting here for advice.
