Looking to adopt a dog within the next couple of weeks, not bothered about sex and if it doesn’t know its name or have a pet name (looking at ex-racers among other breeds) then I need a fab name!

Boys so far:

Kristoff
Sven (yes I’m getting these ideas from Frozen 😃)
Cosmo

Girls:

Hester
Aster

I don’t want anything ending in an ee sound and nothing overused and one of many in the park. Thank you!

I'm not a huge fan of human names for dogs so mine tend to have 'nature' names - Rook, Raven, Bracken etc.

If you are having an ex racer then you won't be letting it off lead anywhere you need to be yelling the name aloud, so I wouldn't worry about that. But I do find that the hard sounds T K Ch are easier for dogs to pick out of a babble.

We generally pick the name to suit the actual dog or cat. I think if you just choose on the basis of liking a name, it may not fit the specific animal.
All ours have had human names.

A friend of mine called her dog Zarbo who was a female labrador

Love those suggestions, thank you.

I currently have a sort of ex-racer (trained but never competitive enough) and he loves to be off lead and has good recall although he’s on a long line if we’re not somewhere enclosed but never strays too far,

Badger, Kipper and Spud are particular favourites of mine.

Yes, definitely needs to fit the dog. My collies all have had traditional collie names. Jaff, Kip, Tyne, Meg. The chihuahua is wee Eck

If I had a dog I’d love to call it something like Fred or Chips or Dickie.

We’ve had a few dogs in the past , they were Shane , already named by the breeder , Saya and Ezzy both border collies and finally Bonnie the westie and Harry a Welsh collie . Friends had Molly and Skye both collies .

I love old fashioned human names for dogs. I’ve a Labrador called Seamus and a pug called Stanley. Girl pugs suit Mabel, Edie, Doris. I love Herbert for a dog too.
