Any experience of 4 terriers out there?

We currently own two. One is age 16 (F), the other is age 3 (M). They get on very well. Here is my question:
There are two terriers (F) age 10 and 11, a bonded pair, in a good local animal refuge. They are described as friendly, no behaviour issues and could live with another dog (possibly dogs). Maybe I’m having a moment, but I’m tempted to investigate…I’d love to offer them a home but…all too much? I work part time from home, spacious garden, love to walk, live in the country…

Investigate!!! Plenty of people have packs of Jack Russells. If all involved are reasonably sane with no behavioural issues then it should work. Only caveat being the 16 year old, would they cope with the disruption and change?

I had 3 JRTs at once and it was fab! My little pack 😍

Thank you very much. DH mentioned the potential impact on our 16 year old too. She's sociable and has sole custody of our bed and the living room, so can have space when she wants it. I am continuing my investigations! X

Thank you! I do love a JR. Our current two terriers are mostly Norfolks, with a nice dose of something else in there too....they are very sweet natured

I would happily have a fourth ! I love my wee pack

ThePoliteLion · 02/10/2025 17:22

Thank you to those who helped with comments. Quick update - the two senior JRs up for rehoming were reserved by another. I'm pleased and confident they are going to a good home - I'd been worried that nobody wanted them.
I've applied to two big Dog Charities to adopt a terrier.
Wow - the application forms are very comprehensive these days. It's good.
I firmly believe that what is meant for you won't pass you by.....another terrier will come

I’m glad that they’ve been reserved and also happy that you’re actively looking to increase your pack. Hope the right little terrorist (not a typo Grin) turns up soon Smile

Thank you for commenting. Update: we’ve just adopted an adult male Patterdale from the Dogs’ Trust. He’s mingling nicely with our two dogs, is very “peoply” and seems happy. Poor chap’s had a bit of a rocky road. We feel lucky he’s come our way. So now it is a pack of three. X

So pleased for you! Hope it works out well, maybe you'll be adding another this time next year?

Oooh stop! Tempting....At least I now have a bona fide hobby; terriers. My children laugh at me. X

@ThePoliteLion Absolutely!! People collect stamps and coins, why not terriers?! 😁

That’s such lovely news but isn’t there something missing from your post @ThePoliteLion?

Shock

Reveal the hounds!

DarkForces · 31/10/2025 18:46

You're brave. Every terrier packs at least four dogs into their soul. I've got one and she's the best but she rules the house with an iron rod 😂

ThePoliteLion · 31/10/2025 18:49

Ah! Sorry, I am being slow tonight! Of course a photo will be provided - let me take one and upload it tomorrow.....I can reveal that all three dogs are shades of brown.

They are indeed forces of nature. I think they have great doggy charisma, regardless of their size. I grew up with a series of golden retrievers (gorgeous) but always knew terriers would be my dogs of choice....

Lucky Patterdale 🥰 But, you do realise, you’ve started something now? Once you have 3, 5 is no issue. And then at 7, what’s a couple more? 🤣🥰

Thank you. So true. I know a superb dog trainer with seven spaniels. She's very matter of fact about it.

Here they are! New dog in the middle, our senior is on the left and the young lad on the right (he’s responsible for the damage to the armchair)
