Burst ear drum - Labrador….

So my lab has had recurrent ear infections for the past 3 years. Since he had his tail docked after an accident.

his ear then swelled so he went in and had that lanced and at the same time they did a through wash out of his ears. A few weeks ago.

they leave the wound open to drain.
they also said it was an unusual bacteria which came up on the swab. So would swab again when he finishes antibiotics.

unfortunately the wound did not heal shut. So yesterday he went back to have it recut and stitched together. Whilst under they did another thorough clean as there was still a lot of gunk in there. Right at the bottom. Seems Labrador ear canals are very long and they have a bend in them.

all was fine yesterday and when he had his breakfast this morning

returned from the school run and came home to him staggering about and his eye brows twitching. No moaning tho.

I’ve taken him back in and they are going to have another look later but likely to be a ruptured ear drum.

anyone else had a lab with this? What happened next?!

poor boy has been wearing a cone since early August and i have already spent a small fortune with the vet.

this “project” Feels never ending and of course we still need to work out how to prevent the infection reoccurring……

please mop my brow, have a cuppa with me and tell me not to worry…..!!

I've never had a dog rupture an ear drum but i had a lab who had frequent ear infections and it turned out to be due to allergies.

Oh bless him. I hope you get some good news soon

Vet says ear drum has not burst…. They kept him in for 2 nights, said he seems a little better today, so I hope to pick him up later.

however we don’t know what caused the issue.
Ie is there a rupture they cannot see….. or has the infection spread to the middle ear…. Or a reaction to the medication…!?

fingers crossed he can come home today, continues to improve and we we can keep any infections at bay going forward
