Smell free house?

LizzieBet14 · 14/09/2025 06:36

We've had lots of family and friends over this weekend to celebrate a birthday.
It's been hard work to get the rooms to be free of dog smell for more than an hour.... I really noticed it when going out of the house and coming back in.
The carpets and furniture have recently been cleaned & we have a plug in air freshener.
Any tips? Thanks 😊

I find febreze classic fabric spray works better than any air freshener. Squirt a few times on soft furnishings and curtains and close the room for 5-10 minutes.
Also wiping doors and windows with diluted fabulosa disinfectant leaves a lasting smell.

What breed of dog is s/he? I notice peoples houses don't smell when they have breeds that have to go to the groomers regularly - poo mixes mostly!

Friends who have dogs who "don't need the groomers" are the ones whose houses are more likely to have a scent.

Could you get around this by bathing the dog at least once a month (whether s/he " needs it" or not at that moment!) and putting a drying robe or coat on them?

It is tricky, breeds who have more oil in their coats do have a stronger scent - labs for example and anything bred for water work.

Buts it's your home and your dog's home too.

Also wash all the dogs bedding and blankets more frequently?

Windows open everyday.
Dog bedding and blankets washed at least once a week, normally twice.
Dog collars etc. washed regularly too.
Dry dog thoroughly after walks and baths and when he comes in from the garden damp.
We also use scented wax melts.

My mum is always surprised that our house doesn’t smell “doggy” and believe me she’d be the first to comment (I’m a dog walker and she’s always saying how disgusting my car smells) 🤣 we have three outdoor cats too.

Wash the dogs
A Teaspoon of cinnamon in the vacuum will neutralise the dog hair smell and vacuum every day (and it helps to have a vacuum that's good at getting up dog hair so you need one with spinny bristles)
