Kennel Cough

My BT has kennel cough and he’s so sad!
It started very suddenly last night, and I took him to the Vet this morning.
He’s 2, so not overly at risk and the Vet happy that it’s a viral strain, so no Antibiotics. He’s been given a one a day anti inflammatory.

He’s normally so bouncy and playful but just wanted to nap all day, in between bouts of coughing.

Does anyone have any tried and tested and safe other remedies that would help?

We didn’t take ours to the vet ans she wasn’t too poorly. Ours was just 7 months when she had it. I asked the breeder & she advised what it was. advises and just advised rest & keep away from other dogs - no walk etc. It was a bit of a pain not walking her for week-10 days (can’t recall the timeframe), especially when she seemed to perk up. She went off food a bit but otherwise ok - just not as energetic. Is yours quite poorly?

He’s just not his normal energetic self, probably tired like the rest of us! Last night was pretty rough with the coughing.
I’ve just taken him out around the roads where I live, passed the park we would often go, which he looked rather longingly at, then refused to move as we went past…. Normal BT behaviour!

I’m not overly concerned, just wanted any tips to help ease the cough. He sounds like he has croup, must be so irritating.

It does sound awful we just tried to make sure she was drinking enough. Maybe add some both broth ?
Sounds like yours is still showing his character!! Bless ‘em. Hope it doesn’t last too long & you have a better night.

It’s definitely a case of the old saying you can lead a border terrier to water but you can’t make it drink….. 🤣

He’s a stubborn little git, kennel cough or no kennel cough!

Manuka honey is good - but he really shouldn’t be going out for walks.

WolfsNipplesChips · 13/09/2025 10:07

He had 15 minutes in a place of very little footfall. Vet said that’s ok.

It’s like human flu or a bad cold. Keep inside, rest, fluids and he’ll get over it.

I wouldn’t walk him for at least 10 days. It can be really serious for some dogs.

He really shouldn't be walked - it's super contagious and like @Newpeep says it can be really serious and make symptoms much worse.

Can I ask how your dog is now and how long/severe it lasted? Going through the same now with out JRT but he's a lot older.

Newpeep · 12/12/2025 10:23

Ironically my border terrier has got it now after a day trial in kennels! She’s on day 12 and the cough has stopped but she’s still snuffly. She’s not left the house and back garden. We’re giving it another week before resuming short walks. I’ve pulled her out of all classes and competitions until January at the earliest. We’ve treated with menuka honey as she’s been well in herself.
