I have 2 shih tzu’s
1is 3 and 1 is 2
I have tried my very best but one of them pees everywhere the other rips my stuff up like my doors, my posts on the stair case is bitten off and now he has started pooping.
I take them out in the garden in the morning and mid day and then out for a walk in the evening and in the garden again at night

i do work 9-3 on office days but mostly 3-4 days from home
they sleep with me
but I’m sick of not being able to have a nice house
yesterdsy I had a friend over and they walked in the kitchen and my dog had just shit there - there are never any signs that they need the toilet I just have to keep trying and guessing before this they were going morning and evening

my 1 year old breaks out of crates so we stopped them he will push his head through. Doors and even the pressure safety gate keeps coming up

I can no longer put them in the kitchen as my 3 year old jumps up to the surfaces!

any ideas? I feel at a loss

Sounds like you’ve never trained them. They need a decent walk in the morning and supervision to stop bad behaviour. Dogs need to be crate trained. You can’t just stick them in.

tripleginandtonic · 22/08/2025 20:59

They need to be t trained, didn't you do that when they were puppies?

Sozsoz · 23/08/2025 00:42

I have trained them but it’s just like they don’t retain anything

How long do you walk them for in the evening?
What type of walk is it, are they getting a sniff walk along the roads or off lead in a field?

Not shih tzu's but I do have a very stubborn breed as well, consistency is key, my boy is nearly a year old and some things are only just starting to sink into his head.
I always joke a bag of rocks is smarter than him as it can do stay reliably.

Add in a morning walk to your routine, this may help the toileting.
What are using to clean up the messes?

Counter surfing is a nightmare, can you put a Stair gate on the acces to that room?

Thanks I think a morning walk would help!
inhave a small
housw so have blocked off the kitchen when I’m at work but that just leaves the hall, would really have liked them to be able to have the kitchen but obviously that’s dangerous now.

You have to keep at it. They're not the brightest of dogs but they usually want to please. I think you've made a mistake having them sleep with you though.

I agree with a walk in the morning and even at lunch time too. I bet it will help with the weeing/pooing. Then you are with them when they do go and can give lots of praise and a treat for doing it in the right place ie not indoors!

Are you cleaning up the wee with a proper enzyme cleaner for dogs? They'll still smell it otherwise and are more likely to continue to go there.

Have they got toys? Redirect them to a toy every time they are chewing something they shouldn't. If they're only doing it while you at work then it's because they're bored - are you leaving music/tv on and leaving some hidden treats and toys with treats they have to work at to get?

Also a walk before you leave is really essential if you're going to the office as leaving them for 6 hours is far from ideal. Is anyone letting them out during that time? Because if they end up toileting in the house because they're being left too long then that is probably why they're toileting in the house at other times too.

They're not getting anywhere near enough exercise, or enough opportunities to go out to the toilet. On your office days, you also should be getting someone to come in half-way through to (at least) let them out into the garden, but ideally to take them out for a half hour walk.

Shih-tzus aren't the brightest dogs in the world, they're also bred as companions so they're not a breed that do well with long periods alone. You need to persist with the training (and do it daily, it's not just a one-off) and make sure you're taking them out into the garden at least every couple of hours when you're at home - and go out with them so you can supervise.

I would also look at their food and meal-times and make sure you're sticking to a routine. If you put food in their bodies at the same time each day, it'll come out at the same time too!
