Okay folks, let's head into late summer/autumn.

Me and @brushingboots had this exact conversation about waterproof trousers the other day. I can’t bring myself to wear some so just stick to sports leggings as it doesn’t bother me too much when they get wet as long as I’m dry from my coat and boots. My legs do get absolutely freezing in them though so would love to know if there’s a better (not super expensive) alternative.

We just nipped out and it turns out dd didn’t shut the front door properly and V got out! DH said it must have been a while as he had his headphones on in the kitchen and didn’t notice, but he heard lots of loud barking eventually. Turns out V is too much of a wuss to run away and was sat on the front step asking to come back inside 😂😂😂

Aubrielle · 16/09/2025 16:34

Thanks @YorkshireFelix
Looks as if it'll just be wet jeans again, but at least the new coat is a bit longer and covers my knees. I suppose if I wear wellies there'll only be a 2 inch gap for the rain to penetrate 😆

Oh my gosh, thank goodness Vinny didn't run off to find you! What a good lad for staying put.

VanGoSunflowers · 16/09/2025 17:01

Just butting in on the waterproof trousers convo - I have a couple of pairs of faux leather trousers that I sometimes wear in the winter! I will probably look ridiculous in them just dog walking but they’re warm, waterproof and comfortable 😂

Aubrielle · 16/09/2025 17:16

I'm sure you'll be rockin' them with your black gothic dog @VanGoSunflowers 😉Proper rock chick.

Used to have a pair of black waterproof overtrousers in our motorcycling days, but have no idea what happened to them.

I love the idea of you rocking leather trousers on your dog walks 😂😂😂

SpanielsGalore · 16/09/2025 21:26

Last time I bought waterproof trousers, they were £5 in the sale in a random outdoor wear shop in Kendal.
I was hoping to rock the long, knee length coat and wellies look this winter.

Due to having two lame dogs, it was just me and K on our walk today. She's almost a year old and I think this is the first time I have taken her out on her own. She was an absolute angel. She ran ahead, but then stopped and waited for me to catch up. When I threw my arms out to the sides, she came dashing back for a fuss. And when I hid behind a tree, she came running back to find me.
She did disappear amongst the trees a couple of times, but only for quick runs and no where near long enough for me to start panicking.

Aww that is lovely. What a superstar! V disappears behind the trees (well it’s more like doing big speedy circles through the woods like a maniac) but he always comes back to me within about 10-20 seconds. The woods are a very exciting place for a spaniel 😄

SpanielsGalore · 16/09/2025 22:41

@YorkshireFelix That sounds like K. 😂 I know it's not for everyone, but I don't mind it.

Aubrielle · 16/09/2025 22:43

It sounds like a lovely walk with K @SpanielsGalore
There's nothing better than having a happy dog.

Filthy, wet, muddy, disgusting day here today. Pupsy brought me a lovely plump pigeon, very much alive, within the first 15 minutes of our morning walk. Brought it in, handed it over nicely, and I put it back in the hedge thinking it'll waddle or fly away happily. An hour later on the way back we pass the same hedge from which she emerges, a moment later with... the same pigeon, as it evidently hasn't waddled or flown very far at all. We repeat the process of handing it in and leaving it, and we go on our muddy way.

Fair play to her, it wasn't at all hurt – at least by her. No blood round her mouth, no marks on it at all. It was probably what in shooting you'd a call a runner – a shot but not dead bird that you'd send your dog out for to collect. So I can't fault her, she's only doing what she would be doing if she was working.

SpanielsGalore · 17/09/2025 12:37

@brushingboots What a good, gentle girl. ❤️ This is how I feel. It's what they are bred to do. And if I can't deal with it, then I shouldn't have got a spaniel.
For all her manicness, when K caught a live duck she brought it straight to me and we released it unharmed. Dead ones are deemed a free meal though.
Crisp and dry here today. Makes a change for Scotland to have better weather. 😁

Haha that is very funny that she brought it to you twice! What a good girl 😄

Very weird weather here today. It was peeing it down and freezing this morning and now it’s gloriously sunny, hot and humid?

I’ve caught DD’s back to school lurgy so haven’t done our big walk today, but it doesn’t hurt giving V a days rest. He has been chilling like an angel all day whilst I WFH. Here he is looking extremely serious.

Just found this on The Guardian

Funny, I was told on this thread a few weeks ago, in no uncertain terms, that knitting with dog hair was not a thing, and that nobody would want Brie's wool.

I think I might hang onto it for now anyway.

Knitting with dog hair was a craze in the 90s – let’s make it happen again

My car's in for repair, so I had to lead walk K down to the beach today. When we set off, I realised I have never lead walked her around the village. She was quite nervous to begin with and stopped at every door to go inside. Fortunately it only took a couple of minutes for her decide it was alright and she was soon dragging me along to the sea.

Ah bless her. How is P??

SpanielsGalore · 18/09/2025 20:53

@YorkshireFelix P is pogo-ing at the stair gate and racing around the garden with K. 🙈 Not quite what the vet had in mind. I don't really want to crate her though so I'm hoping no walks is enough of a rest.

It is so hard to rest them. When V first saw the physio for his cruciate damage she told me to really minimise his activity levels which is pretty much impossible with a 6 month old pup. He was zooming about all over the place!! Are you back at the vets today?

SpanielsGalore · 19/09/2025 12:20

@YorkshireFelix It's so difficult, isn't it? After her surgery she was crated, so it was much easier. Now she's not being walked, so is using her energy to wrestle and run with K. We aren't back at the vets until next week. We have 10 days of painkillers and rest to get through first.
Sounds like V has had as much luck as P with his legs. She had swollen tendons in her front leg at 5 months old and had to be rested. I think that was caused by my sprocker being too rough with her.

I don’t know why I thought you were back today! Hopefully she will get the message and chill out for the next few days although that sounds unlikely 😄

Yes we have been lucky in a sense though as we managed to catch the whole ligament damage/luxating patella very early on. If id have just blindly trusted the vet who said there was no issue when he had an intermittent limp, we’d be much worse off now. Monthly physio and laser sessions have worked wonders so fingers crossed it can be managed well over the next few years. It doesn’t stop him hoofing it about like an absolute maniac when we are out and about!!

Hello, I’m joining this thread on the recommendation of @YorkshireFelix. We’ve just taken on a one year old springer, who is utterly gorgeous. He’s come from a working kennels background so adapting to house living. Doing really well but lead walking and recall are work in progress!
