We are in the process of rescuing a long haired dachshund. She is gorgeous. 3 years old. Does anyone own one and have any advice or tips. Our previous dog was a JRT. I am super excited. We fostered her for a week and she fit right in with our family.

Is that the one with Wispa and Bear. The posts about their daily exploits are a little bit of sunshine Smile

I've had two. No issues except DS's German exchange picked one up by his front legs and swung him round, and he did hurt his back. Also didn't do much for international relations. Dog had to be immobilised in a playpen but made a good recovery.Mine were genetic brothers but not litter brothers and they made me smile a dozen times a day. Hilarious little dogs. They both lived until 18 with no major health problems other than the one mentioned above. However, they were quite short-backed for dachs.

Wot.

would have taken all my self control not to dump the sick kid at the school gate with his bag. And tell them I'll not have an animal abuser under the roof with my family pets.

You want a lifetime policy so any conditions are covered for lifetime rather than excluded on renewal with the 12month type. Go for as high vet bills cover as can afford as spinal surgery along with the lengthy hydro/physio rehab is very expensive and the chances of it becoming a reality with this breed are heartbreakingly high.

Pet plan is more expensive but is a safe bet as it's long established with vets & specialists usually happy to direct claim as they settle quickly so your only expected to pay the excess rather than in full and wait for the insurers to pay you.

Unlike many insurers an individuals claims don't affect their premiums it's spread over a group, therefore you can claim for everything without the fear of it costing you way more than the vet bill in the long run. Some will also give a sillh £££ premium on renewal if the dog has high claims or has reached old age as they don't want the risk, but by this stage it's harder to switch insurers as anything your dog has seen the vet for maybe excluded as a pre-existing condition or are too old for lifetime cover. Many people then feel forced to cancel and are uninsured when they need the cover the most.

Definitely go with PetPlan lifetime.

I didn't when I got my puppy because I didn't know better and just got the cheapest insurance.

when the renewal came up I went to pet plan because I was a bit more educated by that time. But because she had already had one ear infection she is excluded from anything relating to skin and ears for the rest of her life.

I was an idiot. I should have just used PetPlan from the get go.
