We might adopt a little dog called Lucy- but tricky as that’s my nieces name!
any thoughts on a doggie name that’s similar?
perhaps the ‘op’ ‘ee’ aspects is more important than the L?
I think Luna is a bit overused now for pets?

It doesn't have to be similar. Dogs will soon learn a new name.

girljulian · 27/07/2025 20:42

Why can’t they both be called Lucy?

Thatcannotberight · 27/07/2025 20:46

But I think she would adapt to any new name.

Lovely ideas, thank you
@Ellmau do you think she would?

Oh yes, dogs very quickly accept a new name.

NightPuffins · 27/07/2025 21:15

I agree with the previous comment - it doesn’t need to be similar. Anything that a person considers similar, Luna, etc, the dog will hear as different anyway and get used to it.
So you can pick any name you like and they will get used to answering it with a few treats for encouragement. You can also wean them into it by using both for a while then dropping one. So, you call her Lucy Mabel, or Lucy Lemon, whatever, until she comes to you, then drop Lucy.
Though FWIW, Lucy is a cute name and no reason your niece can’t share the name 😊

My neighbours adopted a collie called Bob, they changed his name to Ben ( for similar reasons). The dog responded to his new name and didn't appear confused at all.
He was a lovely dog and used to come stay with me when they went on holiday.

Ahhh that’s helpful, thank you!
yes I can double barrel for a while, that’s a good idea.
agree it’s a lovely name - I do tend to prefer non human names for pets, just a personal preference, I like nature names eg willow, bracken, tor…

I know three human children called Willow ( and lots of dogs) and a human Sorrel.

YorkshireFelix · 28/07/2025 09:34

Rename the child instead.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/07/2025 10:34

Yes good idea
she can use her middle name
which is, obviously, Rose

My dog answers to literally anything, including 'would anyone like a dog biscuit?'

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/07/2025 10:42

Lol
my old dog could hear the word ‘crisps’ from around three miles away
