Sore after grooming

Our dog went to the groomers yesterday to have his heavy coat shorn off for the rest of the summer (wish I could have got him last week when it was so hot!).
He's really bothered by his anus and round his genitals and it looks like the groomer has cut really really close in this area and he's sore.
What can I put on his skin as he's constantly licking himself now? I used some sudocrem last night in desperation but I don't want him ingesting anything. He's a labradoodle.

What breed is your dog?
Sometimes, depending on the coat type short stubble can cause irritation.
If the whole area is red & sore I would think it's clipper burn- in other words the groomer did a terrible job.

Without knowing the breed, most double coats trap air as insulation... this can keep the dog warm in winter and cool in summer. I have Tibetans, they suffer far more in the heat with a short clipped coat ... but then, they hate the heat either way!

He's a labradoodle. He's not red or sore but he's very bothered by it.

It might just be the unusual sensation with less hair...
He should settle into his haircut in a few days.

He’s going to lick anything you put on there so I would just stick with the sudocream and either stick a cone on him or only put it on when you can watch him and interrupt the licking.

It will stop being sore in a day or two.

But if you’re worried, just buy a paw/nose balm from Amazon. Something that soothes and is safe to lick. It’ll do the job

How often does he get groomed? If he had mats under his coat it could have pulled the skin making it a little sore. It's recommended that doodles are groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. (Mine is done every 8weeks. Even then the groomer will find the odd small mat) And brushed regular weekly at least.

Sorry if he is groomed regularly, your post reads that he may not be, As you said summer cut.

When was the last time he was groomed? Could he have had some matting that needed to be shaved off?

Mine sulks for the rest of the day when he goes to the groomer!

Did your groomer squeeze his Anal glands without telling you? That’s a nasty but necessary job that unsettles the dog for several days.
I use coconut oil for skin irritations as the dog will lick whatever you put on it. Just apply it more often.

We've only had him for a few weeks so we've never had him groomed before. As far as I know he didn't have any mats and we comb/brush him every night. The groomer said he had a very difficult coat to get off.
He got so sore I took him to the vets and they said his anal glands were really full so they sorted it. They said he's probably noticed it more since he got the sore bits round his tail.
He's much better now 🙂

Oh bless him, anal glands can be so painful. My beagle needs his emptying occasionally and he's really not himself afterwards.

Glad he's feeling better :)
