Summer 25 pups

Lavenderdog · 07/07/2025 17:20

Any other new puppy owners around this summer? Have been looking back at some of the old puppy support threads and can see how helpful it was for those posters to share their experiences.

9 week old mini schnauzer here - so toilet training and avoiding those needle sharp teeth are the current main activities here!

(And being tolerant of her determination to rid my garden of lavender plants. Hence my user name 😂)

Anyone know much about ear infections?

I’m probably overthinking it as my breed is prone to ear infections.

Her ear looks clean, no redness etc. and no discharge, no smell. But twice today she has scratched it and yelped.

If no better I’m gonna take her the vet tomorrow but I’m sure they already think I’m neurotic with all the non issues I’ve taken her in with.

widewomanofthevillage · 17/07/2025 22:27

Have a good look under / below her ear - I thought Buddy had an ear infection and it was actually that grass seed embedded and digging deeper in his neck, hidden by his long, floppy ear! It's not easy with their lovely curls in the way I grant you but worth a look and a feel yourself to guide the vet if she's still having trouble tomorrow.

Be careful giving antlers to a young pup, as I believe they are way too hard for their teeth. Same with Yak chews. I didn’t give mine one until he had all his adult teeth through. Can hugely recommend the puppy natural chew box from Chomp and Chew. It sounds pricey but ours lasted weeks and weeks.

This has made me realise that I am slightly squeamish, which I've managed to ignore before 😂 Might have to bite the bullet though (or pig snout, or rabbit ears with fur on...🤢).

@CoubousAndTourmalet and @VanGoSunflowers
Female Lab to be called Kayla. We see her again this Friday to make final payment and sign contract then pick her up next Friday. Breeder is a friend of ours

Oooh so exciting! What colour is Kayla? Lovely that the breeder is a friend so presumably you know the mum well.

I'm going to visit and choose our pup tomorrow and will be bringing her home a few days after Kayla comes home. I last visited at 3.5 weeks old and they look twice the size now!

MrsKJones · 17/07/2025 22:43

She is black. I've been told she "will grow into her ears" 🤣

Everything (i think) is ready and I cannot wait to show her off. I believe she is one of the last pups to be collected so hopefully settling her in won't be too difficult

CoubousAndTourmalet · 17/07/2025 23:16

Hope you'll share a photo too @scoobiedoozie ; I believe you said your pup is red...?

LandSharksAnonymous · 18/07/2025 07:30

@BarkItOff rule of thumb: if it doesn’t smell it’s not an ear infection (usually!)😀but good idea to take her in, one of mine once got a spider stuck on her ear canal! Could also be allergies like hayfever!

And the vet would 10000% rather you over panicked and cared than were unbothered by any issues your dog might have! I can remember taking one of mine in for an awful limp - she couldn’t put weight on one leg at all. Everyone in the waiting room said ‘ohh poor thing.’ As soon as the vet called her name she sprinted down the corridor, limp vanished, and sat in front of the vet grinning up at her like some sort of demented hyena!

Yes - she's one of these. Should have a photo of 'the one' later today 🫣

@YorkshireFelix

can second this. Gives them long lasting chew to settle them… also worked with pup on our first pub visit. Had a brief chew on a pig ear (gross but he loved it) and then slept next to me, despite quite busy pub.

Our box of chews arrived today @YorkshireFelix and I can confirm they have passed the very high standards of a shoe-eating Labrador 😂
Here is the sweet boy today 🥰

@VanGoSunflowers he is such a sweetheart!

widewomanofthevillage · 18/07/2025 21:04

The floppy ear is just melting me! Nice ink btw!

MrsKJones · 18/07/2025 22:35

We saw our girl again tonight. DS was first through the door, and Kayla bounded up to greet him. OMG I am head over heels in love with her.

@YorkshireFelix that chew box looks good

I've been advised to avoid pork; does anyone else not give their Labrador pork?

CoubousAndTourmalet · 18/07/2025 22:42

She's beautiful @MrsKJones
Her expression is filled with character, even at this young age.

I've never given pork to any of my dogs.

Can I join? Our little land shark is a 12 week old Hungarian Vizsla girl. She is beautiful, clever, sensitive, very loving and friendly but a pup! I have forgotten how tough these first few months are. She’s only been allowed out the past 3 days so the whole world is new and exciting for her.

The first things we really need to work on are the jumping up and biting when excited, typical puppy behaviour but not good in a puppy who is very quickly going to become a large dog.

Absolutely gorgeous pup @sweetkitty

VanGoSunflowers · 19/07/2025 08:55

@MrsKJones that face! Enough to melt anyone at a thousand paces!
@sweetkitty absolutely stunning puppy! A friend of mine often looks after her friend’s Vizsla - he is a gorgeous colour like yours, beautiful dog, absolutely no concept of personal space 😂

Mind you, Pabs is quite often to be found trying to lie down on my neck 😂

VanGoSunflowers · 19/07/2025 09:09

It was a little cooler here the other day so I decided to test how Pabs would behave if he needed the toilet but the door was shut.

So here is what happened… he walked over to the back door, looked at it, and then shat on my living room rug and then barked to tell me he had shat on my living room rug 😂😂😂😂

Thats going to take a little more work I think. It did make me laugh - he doesn’t bark often, he seems to have purpose with his barks - I had to smile that he barked after doing his business in the house to alert me to it. Sweet but not useful 😂

Look at those legs! She's going to be as lanky as a foal. Have you had Vizslas before, @sweetkitty ? I don't know much about them except that they're gundogs and pretty much all working lines. She's absolutely gorgeous x

😄that's hilarious.

I taught Bill to use bells to ask to go out, but be careful what you wish for. He used them when he was fed up of me eating dinner because he knew I'd get up to open the door, then he'd go out, get a bit of gravel, and drop it very pointedly on the wooden floor, over and over again.

MrsKJones · 19/07/2025 10:01

I've been recommended to use cut up hot dog sausage for high value treats; can I use webbox chibb rolls to serve same purpose. Obviously very small amounts and only as a high value treat for new commands
