Summer 25 pups

Any other new puppy owners around this summer? Have been looking back at some of the old puppy support threads and can see how helpful it was for those posters to share their experiences.

9 week old mini schnauzer here - so toilet training and avoiding those needle sharp teeth are the current main activities here!

(And being tolerant of her determination to rid my garden of lavender plants. Hence my user name 😂)

@VanGoSunflowers - congrats to you and well done Pablo for your lovely walk today.

SoupDog’s first paddle in the sea last week. She met a whippet and ran in circles on the sand for 10 minutes. Think she’s going to like water.

@Inastatus thank you! I will say though, he’s upped the shark phase a lot over the past couple of days. It feels like play snapping?? Seems to only do it when he is worked up but I also feel like it might be his teeth but would a teething puppy react by play snapping at you? Or do you think he is just tired/over stimulated?

@soupmaker what a cutie! The water looks lovely as well. Makes me sad I live in the midlands 😂

@VanGoSunflowers - my pup gets very bitey/snappy when he is over stimulated so I’d take a guess at that being the issue.
The best thing I’ve found for teething is antlers - Monty loves his.

Can I be a total bore and tell you all about the lovely walk we had earlier??
It was a local park that we drove to, only I had no idea there were all these walking routes out the back of it (despite living in this town my whole life and being very in to walking!)
For the short lead portion, Pablo walked beautifully with only a a few bits of kibble needed. Off lead he was so well behaved, absolutely in his element and loving life but not going off too far and always checking in with me. There was hardly anyone about but when someone did appear from around the corner, he remembered to sit nicely to wait for a fuss and I stood chatting to her for a little while. Then he did the same with this lovely older couple who we happened across who were cooing over him and I stood and chatted to them too!

I know this doesn’t mean we have cracked it, I know tomorrow’s walks could be hellish but I just wanted to have a little celebratory moment after such a nice walk. I live alone and WFH too so it was nice to chat to some lovely people 😊

This is my dream. You're doing brilliantly. Even if there are hard days you are obviously teaching good habits over time.

I still usually forget what to do in the moment sometimes as saying ‘no’ firmly just seems to spur him on 😂🤦‍♀️

Antlers are a good shout! Whole, frozen carrots seem to be a good one with Pablo. I’ve had a look in his mouth and to me, it does look like he is teething but I’m not an expert.

Inastatus · 17/07/2025 08:42

@VanGoSunflowers - I know exactly what you mean. When he’s in this mood saying no firmly has zero effect 😅
my pup loves carrots so I’ll try giving them frozen - great idea for this warm weather too.

VanGoSunflowers · 17/07/2025 08:44

@Inastatus the thing I have found works but only if I do it immediately is to cut off his access to me for a few minutes. A ‘time out’ if you will! I get him to go in the kitchen and close the gate over and I stay in the living room for a few mins. Sometimes this is enough to calm him down!

YorkshireFelix · 17/07/2025 11:00

Be careful giving antlers to a young pup, as I believe they are way too hard for their teeth. Same with Yak chews. I didn’t give mine one until he had all his adult teeth through. Can hugely recommend the puppy natural chew box from Chomp and Chew. It sounds pricey but ours lasted weeks and weeks.

YorkshireFelix · 17/07/2025 11:00

Also lovely to see the puppy thread up and running again! If everyone wants to post lots of pictures I wouldn’t be mad about it 😂

CoubousAndTourmalet · 17/07/2025 11:12

Sounds like the perfect walk @VanGoSunflowers !
You've got a goodun ❤

In agreement re Antlers and Yak chews. We have a vet in the family and she warned against both when we got our girl, she said they have no "give" and can damage the teeth.
I also wouldn't recommend coffee wood chews - we tried Brie with those but they splinter and big spikey shards come off.

VanGoSunflowers · 17/07/2025 11:21

@YorkshireFelix thank you for the recommendation, I have just ordered a box!

They are brilliant, I recommend to everyone!! They can even substitute some stuff to make them suitable from 8 weeks too. I struggled to find any chews which were suitable for 12+ weeks and they were a lifesaver. Gave me 5 minutes peace when V was tiny 😄

Inastatus · 17/07/2025 12:38

@YorkshireFelix - thanks for the heads up. I’ll remove for now though it’s probably still better for him than the rocks in the garden he loves to gnaw on when I’m not looking 😅

MrsKJones · 17/07/2025 12:42

Loving all your updates.

I woke up this morning and was excited that today was the day and we get to see our girl again. Then I realised it's only Thursday 😫

I hate to tell you, but my girl is still chewing gravel & stones (and the odd snail) at 15 months 😨

Gorgeous, from No another lab owner (not a pup) .

Bill is also 15 months and loves to dig up rocks to chew on. He's been known to trot around with a quarter of a paving slab in his daft gob. Which I do prefer to him gargling with tiny pieces of gravel...

LandSharksAnonymous · 17/07/2025 17:43

@MrsKJones but only another few days till she comes home (right?!)?

MrsKJones · 17/07/2025 19:07

Yea. Seeing Kayla tomorrow to sort out paperwork and bring her home on 25th. She has gotten so big (breeder showed me photo tonight when I saw her)

CoubousAndTourmalet · 17/07/2025 19:17

So exciting @MrsKJones
I hope you'll share a photo next week after you get her home, she sounds gorgeous!

widewomanofthevillage · 17/07/2025 19:24

So exciting with new pups coming home and familiar ones doing new things!

We have not had such a good time, the abcess we thought antibiotics had sorted soon refilled and an ultrasound discovered a foreign object extremely deep down in the flesh under his ear so Buddy had an operation today to remove it and flush everything out. The vet had had to do some unusual use of an ear scope to be able to reach and retrieve it without cutting into him any more so I'm grateful for his ingeniuity!

We now have a cone that has to stay tied to his harness for a week so it doesn't ride up onto his wound, a drain stitched into place and more drugs. He's not best pleased at wearing the harness indoors, nor that he can't fit his head under the table beside me as normal and keeps bashing the cone into doorframes and trying to scratch through it.

Damn grass seeds... 😡

Awww, poor baby @widewomanofthevillage That sounds really nasty. How frustrating that he needs the cone for so long, I imagine it'll be a struggle.

Get Well Soon, little Buddy ❤
