Bad doggy breath

Just wondering how people remedy this?
I’ve tried dental sticks but my cocker spaniel Gweni is fussy with treats and doesn’t touch them.

I do brush her teeth regularly but that doesn’t help that much.

Any suggestions are welcome.

We have the same problem with our working cocker. I try to use those finger wipe things to clean his teeth but he won't let me brush them and his breath stinks. He is going for a dental clean under anaesthetic next month, this will be the second time he's had it done. He is almost 8.

I have no solution but wanted to ❤️ your gorgeous dog.

Depends if she's eaten something unpleasant (poo), her diet is bad, or there is something wrong in her mouth / digestive system. Any of the above could cause bad breath and they all have different solutions. Some solutions are more successful than others.

Try fish jerky, ours had one at bed time with his kong.

Ours has fish jerky every evening and has only ever gad regular doggy breath, didn’t realise it was good for their breath as well as their skin Smile

Will your DDog est a raw carrot @sjtrain69?

Was thinking as an alternative to dental sticks. I was told it’s good for controlling plaque and presume that helps breath too.

Haven’t tried carrots yet

Is it possible it's your own breath you're smelling?

buttonm00n · 01/06/2025 22:25

Our small terrier has the worst fishy breath! I was adamant he must have an infection or something. Vet said that he’d lost a couple of his teeth (which can happen apparently) but there was no infection in his gums. Some dogs just stink.

Cadenza12 · 01/06/2025 22:27

Take her to the vets and let them examine. If she needs them cleaned it will be a GA but it will sort problem out. I have a puppy and the breeder recommended fish skin chews from 6 months, which might be worth a try too.

My dog's breath is rank, like a dead body. He's a border terrier with a very short, very tiny (and powerful) jaw - nearly impossible to get a brush or a finger in. He has severe meat protein allergies and his food has to be soya protein, but the only commercial food available has SUGAR in!

I've used all the seaweed powders, vegan dental sticks, antlers, dental toys, dental rinse in his water, and I've searched high and low for toothpaste that doesn't contain poultry meal and tried to push some between his cheek and teeth, all to no avail. He's 4 and he'll be having his first dental soon, before his gums start getting sore. 😔

Graia · 01/06/2025 23:35

Adding Plaque-off to my dog’s food stopped her breath from smelling bad.

Harsh! Grin

Will pet insurance cover teeth cleaning under anaesthetic? My dog’s breath is foul smelling but the vet has quoted £700 to do the procedure!

I don’t think most will. We use a Vet by Subscription so it was included on the plan. I don’t think there are many verts that operate that way though.

Where’s the laugh reaction gone?!

DinoLil · 04/06/2025 12:44

When I rehomed my 8yr old in September, her breath could knock you over from 6ft away. It was horrific!

Took her to the vet to be registered and to be checked over. Turns out she had two rotten teeth. Since they've been removed the stink has gone.
