@CoubousAndTourmaletIf they won’t kill another dog then they aren’t willing to do the job they were bred for and people need to hear it that bluntly. They were bred to fend off coyotes/wolves/stray dogs and fight to the death to protect their flock. In the absence of a flock they tend to take on children as their flock. Almost no one can stop a LGD that has decided that the poorly trained dog that is jumping on their kids needs to be killed. The adults will all be shouting at each other and the dog takes that as a clear fight signal. They also don’t look for your permission. Working dogs seek your direction. LGB are bred to work independently. It makes their intelligence and their personalities amazing BUT it means you have far less control because they will and do act independently.

Raventree ranch!

Oh, Yes! I've seen a lot of theirs!

I follow a German Pyrenean one and also I have a bit of a thing for Spanish Mastiffs, so I search out videos with those on.

Absolutely. And you only really learn this by living with them for years. Even pet LGD's will ignore the owner and make their own decisions when the need arises for them to go off to investigate a speck in the distance. Their instincts will override anything you tell them. But, as you rightly say, they don't work to command. They will make their own decisions and you cannot change that, nor should you expect to.
This is what makes it so risky to allow them to run free unless you have a lot of land and secure fences. We are asked so many times why we don't let our dogs off the lead in public - with all but one we daren't do it. Our breed in particular is a wolf in sheep's clothing. People always think they're gentle giants, they never realise it's more of a guard dog than a GSD or Rottie will ever be!

No matter what the dog trainers say, it is not possible to program a LGD to think or behave like a gundog or whatever. They will still think independently of the handler or owner, no matter how well "trained" they are, which is why they're such a challenge for a lot of people. Unless you understand what they have been bred to do for hundreds of years, then you will never find these dogs easy to live with.

I think all of this is why I love them. I respect their independent nature and the fact that they have such a different mindset from other dogs. They're fascinating to be around and that's what keeps me so enthused about LGD after almost 50 years of sharing my life with them.

@CoubousAndTourmalet 100% I have a lot of respect for them. I think that's how you get the bond really. The respect and trust, they can feel it. I can see when shes in guard mode as her whole persona changes and something takes over her. She stands differently, she stops and observes very carefully assessing a situation and thinking about what needs to be done. We have a lot of low flying air craft. When something comes, if I'm sat on the field she will stand right over me to cover me. If we are standing she pushes herself against my legs until whatever threat she feels has passed.

@Reallyyyyyy Exactly. Mutual respect and trust. When they love and trust you, it's such an honour. Especially as they're often so indifferent towards others. Essentially, we are part of their flock.

It is incredible in a youngster, this protective behaviour that you describe. The way they think things through, they don't look to you to tell them how to act, they decide for themselves. She will go on amazing you like this throughout her life.

The more you watch them, the more fascinating you find them. Truly.

(Honestly, I'm such a LGD bore, totally obsessed 🙄😴🤓)

@CoubousAndTourmalet oh she let's me use her tummy as a pillow 🤣 no one else is allowed though.

Just got back from another walk. She will pie on her back and I put my head on her tummy and we stay like that for a bit.

Her and I do have a great bond. She's more like a protective pet with me. When shes with dh shes like shes on a mission. When we are all together she herds us like sheep
