Lucky girl with 3 acres to patrol - I hope you have good fences...😉All the LGD breeds are great escapologists!

In agreement with @abracadabra1980 - the Anatolian is a fascinating (and ancient/primitive) breed. Not a dog for everyone, but it sounds as if your girl has definitely found her people.

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 03:23

Thank you! Yes!! Chickens, ducks and sheep are next!

Sorry I fell asleep. Will write properly in the AM

I'm LGD obsessed, but sadly have never had land or livestock for them to guard. We do live semi-rural, in a Pennine village, so we're always up on the moors or in the woodland with them. We try to let them be who they are and retain their independent spirit as much as possible.
It's a fascinating group of dogs with a unique mindset. They're not a dog for everyone, but once you begin to understand how their brains work, they are the most wonderful companions.
It's lovely to see an Anatolian on here, thank you for sharing photos of your beautiful girl. It's great to hear how good she is around your children, and that she instinctively understands their different personalities, and what they each need from her. The intelligence of LGD still amazes me, even after all these years (48 and counting!).

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 11:57

Thank you @CoubousAndTourmalet yes shes lovely! Although ruined my green beans last night taking out the stick! So will be building a fence around our vegetable garden today and tomorrow. Likely doing this myself as dh is at work.

Well I did ask on here before we got her as I havent had a dog ever. Dh wanted her. He's turkish and shes technically a kangal. But everyone got up in arms about it and how she was going to mall us all to death. I wander if I said anatolian shepherd it would have been a different reaction.

Shes 100% sivas kangal. She's in love with our post man and he with her! Her recall is getting better but if shes decided shes busy, she will ignore you. But we have our own fields so it's not an issue really. The neighbours are a 8 minute walk away and have a cane corso. So they aren't adverse to large dogs if on the rare occasion she gets out of the garden.

I have learnt a lot. Im good with animals in general. But we have really taken to each other. Dh is jealous as she was supposed to be his, and she listens to me more than him. But I work from home so I'm in and out with her daily unless ill.

We found a companion for her up for adoption. I spoke to the charity on the phone and they sounded eager and said someone else was coming to see him and if he doesn't go then we can come. So I emailed them our whole set up, images etc and called them again and they said he was still available but we weren't a suitable match...

Very weird! As there won't be many suitable matches for these dogs! But anyway. He's still on the website last time I looked.

They did a sob story about kids cutting off his ears in turkey. But this actually wouldnt be true. Farmers do this in turkey as they are used against coyotes etc and they will go straight for the ears and rip them. So they are cut as puppies to stop injuries.

Im a bit dubious about animal charities they are always full and they make it hard to adopt. I wander if there's some sort of government grants given to the charities making it in their interest to keep animals...?

I wish we could add videos on here! You could see how fast she runs chasing cars along the hedge row!

If you have children small enough to use a paddling pool I imagine that’s why the charity wasn’t keen on giving you a rescue Kangal. You’d be far better off with another pup you can raise yourself. But two dogs is very different to one especially if you aren’t used to facilitating dog relationships and small kids can easily get harmed even if by accident when dogs decide to scrap. If she’s not yet 2-3 then you haven’t seen her fully formed adult personality either and in LGD there’s a very big shift when they mature. Anatolians are some of my favourite dogs and we had one in a different country when the kids were small. I really wouldn’t buy from Kelly in Scotland however…

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 12:18

@Dstoat ofcourse, in hindsight it's a good idea we didn't take him! You are right. I went off tangent thinking about charities!

My youngest is 6 and eldest 13. The 6 year old has quite good control over her. If she gets too bouncy, shes got her authorities no in good order and our girl stops immediately.

We have had a dog trainer in and she comes every now and then.

My dh is turkish and we have spent a lot of time with his families Shepherds so we aren't completely unaware. Ofcourse 2 weeks with them isn't the same as living. But we have had her for 9 months now and everything has been fine so far.

Just to add. The kids aren't ever alone with her. She has her own area closed off when kids are out playing. She free roams at night and when the kids are at school. The kids play with her when we are there and when we go for walks.

@Dstoat I missed your bit about Kelly. I have seen her online. But havent used her. We got our girls from someone we know well.

Why would you avoid Kelly? I don't have plans anymore for a second dog. But just out of interest.

OP- what is the bath for? To wash the dog in, for it to swim in, sit in to cool down???

I saw someone had converted an old fridge and a deep freeze into plunge pools. 1 removed the door from the fridge, removed the drawers and laid it on its side. This site is about plunge pools, but it wouldn't need to be ice water obviously.https://www.brassmonkey.co/blogs/journal/converting-a-chest-freezer-into-an-ice-bath-or-ice-plunge?srsltid=AfmBOopNzQSprReRi5ANHb3tHTLU_Zvn9METPiY50g-OKj9fvNAOlTtw

Converting a chest freezer into an ice bath or ice plunge

The conversation with my wife Gemma went something like this… “I need to empty the freezer to turn it into an ice bath”…

CoubousAndTourmalet · 26/05/2025 12:41

I almost asked Anatolian or Kangal!

Sadly the Kangal is getting a bit of a reputation as some are falling into the wrong hands in urban environments that are totally unsuitable. I have a relative who's a vet in a city practice, she has seen photos of my parents Anatolian although she never met him. She recently told me of someone with 7 Kangal dogs - she has treated the dogs and said he does not treat them well. She had no issue with the dogs themselves, only his handling of them.

It's a pity about the dog in rescue, but honestly, I agree with @Dstoat - with a young family I would not risk it. Wait until you feel ready to introduce a puppy. If you get a pup go for a male; two bitches can be difficult and will probably fight. We were multi dog for 12 years; 3 together, 1m, 2f. The rescue clearly knows little about the breed if they were unaware that the ears are cut off by the Shepherds to avoid injury. Many working LGD are cropped in this way, although our breed is not.

Oh yes, would love to see a video of her running free, if only it was possible here. I'm sure she's a very happy girl having all that space and freedom.

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 12:47

@JDM625 good idea! All 3 really. I shall take a look. Thank-you

OP posts:
Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 12:49

@CoubousAndTourmalet agree with everything you said. Im not looking to get another for a while now to be honest. It was only because he popped up! But in hindsight now is not the right time.

Yes, I avoided saying kangal because everyone jumps to them being violent and used as fighting dogs. When in reality this is a few people who do this.

At the end of the day dogs will behave that way if handled to be that way!

Ours is a gentle (bouncy) giant. And np cropped ears either!

@ReallyyyyyyI won’t comment directly as it will end up deleted but I would look very closer at the following for any LGD breeder:
How many litters are they producing? This should be a very low number as there are very very few suitable homes in the UK. Does the breeder sell to people living in flats? Selling to make a profit or the betterment of the breed? All will say the latter of course but you can tell by who they will give a pup to. Constantly in bun fights online and with neighbours should raise red flags.

Would love to see all your dogs too!

If you want to see my current girl, there's a few pics of her on this thread:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5329630-adolescent-dog-survival-thread-for-teenage-dirtbags?page=2&reply=144202831 You don't need to scroll through posts, just click on photos at the top.

She is from European working lines, her Mum, older sister and litter brother are all working on farms as protection dogs. She's just a pet - she sleeps indoors but has garden access all day. She is very independent minded and her recall is nonexistent so we lead walk with her for miles.

I'm hoping she won't be my last LGD, although I'm in my early sixties so I should be trading down to a smaller breed 😉 I'd love for her to have a companion. It'll likely be another Pyrie though; I feel that Anatolians/Kangal need more space and freedom than we can currently offer. I love all the LGD breeds though, and if we were ever in a position to move and to have land and livestock, it might be a different story.

Dstoat · 26/05/2025 13:03

@ReallyyyyyyI’ve only known one Anatolian/Kangal who could be walked off lead once an adult. They won’t generally start a fight but they simply will not back down once adults. They can easily kill your average poorly socialised/no dog manners Labrador in seconds. If walked on the same paths they will also consider those paths ‘theirs’ and will defend them. I’d be very careful that your dog knows you will intervene if a pushy/no manners dog starts mounting them/T’ing up etc. As a puppy they are mostly so gentle and forgiving and as they hit maturity that all changes. They become quite dignified and don’t suffer fools gladly. They really aren’t giant Labradors. They’re very serious guard dogs and instincts matter a lot in dogs.

Dstoat · 26/05/2025 13:09

For those interested in other giant guarding breeds that are a bit more workable I’d suggest looking at a Broholmer. Ours is the perfect for us.

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 13:14

Thank you @Dstoat no danger of that. She never gets walked off of our land and never will. We have a vet who comes to the house.

Probably sounds a bit strange but shes here for a job and isn't a traditional pet. So as much as she gets played with and love and cuddles, she is very much a working dog and we have set play time.

We avoid the neighbours when walking around the area and we let each other know when planning and off lead walk. So we are lucky we have a great neighbour relationship. They have a xxl dog too so know how it is.

Thank you for letting me know though and very good info to have.

And thank you re the breeders. We are nowhere near Scotland but it's good to know.

Her name is Brie, she is indeed a big shaggy beast and we have white fluff in every sandwich and every mug of coffee.

Re the 'smaller', she was my compromise - I wanted another male, but my husband insisted a girl would be easier for me now I'm a little old lady 🙄 Clearly Brie didn't get the memo - she's huge 😆And I still want another boy!

Very well said.
Even in the PMD, which is, arguably, the softest and most domesticated of the LGD, the guarding instinct should never be underestimated. Only one of our 8 Pyreneans could ever be trusted off the lead, yet people still imagine they're just like a large Golden Retriever. As you rightly say, the adult LGD is very different from the puppy, and this is why so many end up in rescue at 18 months/2 years, when people realise just what they've taken on.
