Would something like this work?
Large Vintage Reclaimed Rustic Metal Ice Bath Tub Trough Garden Planter Pond - Etsy UK

RedRiverHog · 25/05/2025 21:37

A trough for sheep/cows?

Reallyyyyyy · 25/05/2025 21:39

Oo @xmasdealhunter thank you. Yes maybe. Im wandering if she will grow out of it quickly.

I looked at troughs but I couldn't find one wide enough.

Im thinking I should get a second hand bath tub for the garden.... at least then I could drain it! 🤣

@Tiredofwhataboutery yes but Im thinking she will outgrow it quickly. She's not even a year old yet. But that's my first choice at the moment. Thank you

I use a different brand but same thing for my dog

I know you wanted steel or metal but if it's for durability, I have had this for around 5 years now

@OhNameHgcaher oooo that looks good. Is it very thick ? I was looking for metal so she doesn't chew it.

Really thick. My dog is a serial plastic chewer and he doesn't give this a second glance chewing wise ( but.... he loves having baths / loves having it filled just so he can lie down in it in hot weather ) so I think it always being full of water distracts him from even thinking about chewing it.

Mine lives outside and is still in fantastic condition

My Pyrenean girl is still very mouthy at 14 months old.

Reallyyyyyy · 25/05/2025 21:55

@OhNameHgcaher ok perfect! Thank you. I shall add it to my basket and have a proper look! My pup lives outside so it will be filled every couple of days then emptied and cleaned and repeat. I stupidly left the kids paddling pool put and she was in it for a few days so I resigned to the fact it was hers now and the she ripped it up. I thought it would happen but as she's used it for a week and not even thought about it, I thought we where good..nope. my garden is now covered in plastic pool!

@CoubousAndTourmalet how are you finding it? She sometimes goes for my hands. As in she puts her mouth over them to get me to stroke and play with her. She doesn't bite but she doesn't realise how strong she is and sometimes catches with teeth as she's moving her head about.

OP posts:
Reallyyyyyy · 25/05/2025 22:02

She's good though
She's out patrolling the grounds now.

She goes around the house and field barking then will settle down when she's satisfied it's safe

Oh wow - you've made my day with a pic of your Anatolian - she is absolutey stunning. Amazing breed but not for the fainthearted! I fostered an Anatolian X puppy a few years back - christ it was an eye opener re destruction. I couldn't crate him as he had been a street dog and scared of everything. Was like living with an olympic athlete - he almost scaled a 10ft fence 😁 I currently have a Newfoundland and she ate every plastic pool as a pup, too (we now just have an outdoor showering area which makes life easier). I hope you find what you are looking for and enjoy the rest of your life with her - happy days!

You could get a stock tank and use it as a paddling pool for the kids and the dog. They aren’t as cheap as above but they’re indestructible.

abracadabra1980 · 25/05/2025 22:11

@Dstoat had to look up what this was, (asked my mate, ChatGPT 😁) sounds perfect for my Newf to actually swim in - she's 41kg - thanks for the suggestion - hope OP finds it interesting. Here's the info I was given....

A stock tank is a large, round or oval container traditionally used on farms to hold water for livestock like cattle or horses. However, many people now use them as dog pools or even DIY backyard plunge pools.
For your large dog, here's what to know:
Benefits of a stock tank as a dog pool:

  • Durable: Made from heavy-duty galvanized metal or thick plastic.
  • Spacious: Common sizes range from 100 to 300 gallons — plenty of room for a large dog to splash or lie down in.
  • Weather-resistant: Can stay outdoors year-round (though drain in winter if using metal).
  • Chew-proof (metal): Ideal for dogs who might bite inflatable pools.
⚠️ Things to consider:
  • Weight when filled: Can be difficult to move once full.
  • Slippery sides: Some dogs may need a ramp or mat for easy entry and exit.
  • Heat: Metal can get hot in sun; keep in shade or fill with cool water.
🐾 Recommended size: For a Newfoundland or similar large breed, go for at least 150–200 gallons (approx. 6 ft in diameter if round). Rubbermaid and Behlen are trusted brands. Would you like suggestions for specific models available in the UK?
Reallyyyyyy · 25/05/2025 22:14

@abracadabra1980 thank you! Yes she can be a handful but she has a huge 3 acre garden and adjoining fields when we walk her. She free roams on the garden which helps keep her less destructive. She's amazing with the kids and very protective. She's just not aware of how big she is. She's good at reading people though. One of my kids isn't very good with animals. She's picked up on this and she's much calmer around him. One of my daughters is a huge animal lover and they run around like.mad things together. Luckily she doesn't mind bruises as if she runs into you, it's a bruise!

She's very much my dog and she likes to stand over me when aeroplanes come over low. And she gets us know if there's someone around she doesn't know (we live rurally) but once she knows someone is 'safe' she doesn't alert as loud. It's more a low growl so I know someone is there.

She loves footballs and loves to follow me around as I do all the vegetables and fruits. I think shes my best friend!

Yeah, same here. Our girl grabs our hands when we're petting her and sometimes even when we are lead walking. I think some of them are just more tactile in that way, but as you've said, they can hurt you without meaning to because the teeth are huge. More so in the Anatolian than Pyrenean even - my parents had an Anatolian male 35 years ago, and his molars were colossal!

This girl is my 8th PMD. All the others grew out of the mouthing pretty quickly after the adult teeth came through, but with her it has persisted. We now think it's just habit. We've tried to discourage it, but now we're just working on teaching her to be more gentle. She is also a lead biter.

Really, the giant breeds/Livestock Protection Dogs are babies for so long, and you're totally right - they have no concept of their strength. Strangely, my males have been easier - more gentle and less stubborn, than my females, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a general thing.

I hope your gorgeous girl will enjoy her new pool.

abracadabra1980 · 25/05/2025 22:43

Oh gosh you must keep updating on this amazing breed. I studied all I could find about LGD's when I had my foster pup. I didn't even know what it stood for initially. They need a perimeter to patrol and your set up sounds absolutely perfect. Lucky girl. I found my young man a forever home on a farm in the end as my home and garden weren't right for him. There is an amazing breeder in Scotland - If I recall correctly, I think her kennel affix is something like Sunlions Anatolians - her name is Kelly, and she knows all there is to know about them. You know you need chickens now, don't you!
