New puppy arriving today! How to crate train with an existing dog roaming free?

We are so excited. He is ten weeks and will join us, our three teens and our seven year old cavapoo.

Any tips for introducing the two dogs? And how do you crate train a puppy at night and while you are out if the older dog is free to roam the house? Does that work?

last question: did you get up at night to let the puppy out to the loo or just leave a pad in the crate?

Ours slept n a crate at night and in the daytime she had a metal dog play pen/ run. She could see our dog but not get into any trouble unsupervised. She went into the run for time out when she got overstimulated or over tired. It helped massively her having space with her toys and where she could nap. £59 from Amazon.

There's a trainer on Facebook Shay Kelly Mcs , A Voice for the voiceless, a force free trainer. He's just introduced a new puppy to his older dog and demonstrates the set up needed and explains how do it.

Lovely puppy, OP, enjoy.

Crate in your room or someone sleeps on the sofa nearby. Older dog nearby as it usually would be. But you absolutely cannot leave it in a crate all night with a puppy pad - that’s pretty grotty.

Introductions slowly. Never leave them inattended. Give the existing dog a safe space to get away. Don’t change their routine. A good breeder should have checked if you had an existing dog and offered the appropriate advice - best bet is to speak to them. They should know if the puppy will react in a particular way to an older uninterested adult, for example.
