Cruciate recovery - no surgery

Hi,

It has been 2 weeks since my terrier ruptured his cruciate ligament (we think). He’s only 9kg, we’re waiting to see if it will recover with pain relief, anti-inflammatories and rest. Has anyone else had any success with their dog recovering from cruciate rupture without surgery? How long did it take? Any advice? It hasn’t improved much so far. We’ve had X-rays but not had the results yet.

Thank you xx

Your dog will have to be on extreme rest for at least 8 weeks proably longer. The cruciate will not repair itself but the scar tissue may mean the knee stays stable.

X rays do not show damage of the cruciate but it will show the resut of the cruciate damage on the bone.

I would not exect to see any difference in a 2 week time frame. If your dog is stil limping you need to have more extreme rest so the cruciate is not ripped further.

Okay thank you. Good to have an idea about the time frame. I think he is resting enough, he only goes in the garden when he needs the loo, otherwise he’s in his bed. He doesn’t use the leg so I think he’s not making it worse, hopefully.
