BorrowMyDoggy - Anyone using it?

Hi, I am on BorrowMyDoggy and I am now borrowing 2 different dogs each wk and its going very well. In terms of making arrangements each wk i.e. time/day etc ,we correspond via WhatsApp only. I think this is fine and wanted to ask others who might be on it too and if they too are corresponding via WhatsApp too and not via the BorrowMyDoggy portal page. Many thanks!

I used to use it (not an owner) and we did WhatsApp too. The risk isn’t yours.

Now, as an owner, it’s really hit home how nuts it is to put your dog on there

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:14

Really , why do u think its a risk in that way from the owner's perspective?

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:16

I look after both dogs very well indeed

Interesting! I’ve always wanted to do this but I’ve been too nervous to in case I get scammed into walking a super aggressive dog 🥲
My and my DD would love to walk a little dog. x

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:19

You decide what dog you are willing to walk...u choose. Its going really well I must say. I am very assertive though, happy to say no.

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:21

both owners did the first walk with me and this was at their request btw.i liked that a lot

OP posts:
lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:22

And both of these dogs are very well behaved .

faerietales · 06/05/2025 15:24

I can’t believe that people use that platform tbh - it’s batshit to me that you’d just hand your dog over to a stranger with no experience or training 😬

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:25

I think differently. I think its great. I trust myself completely with both of these dogs and I think both owners trust me too, feels very nice indeed. I have had enough experience with dogs. Both dogs respond very well to me indeed.

What happens if they bring the dog back ?

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:26

what do u mean bring the dog back?

OP posts:
faerietales · 06/05/2025 15:35

What’s to stop you from taking their dog and not returning it? What happens if the dog is injured or gets in a fight or runs off?

I just find it baffling that anyone would trust a total stranger with their dog.

Couldthiswork · 06/05/2025 15:44

I’ve used it for a few years and it’s been wonderful. Met up with a few people where it came to noting but had a lovely couple who regularly had him one day a week until they moved away.

Now have an another absolutely wonderful couple who have him at mutually convenient times. Odd days and weekend while I am at my partners (he has a nervous cat so can’t take him). They adore him and he them, he’s spoiled rotten with wonderful walks and fuss

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 15:46

Well there's no danger of me not returning their dog thats for sure, I believe both owners can feel that from me. The dog may get injured. May get injured if it was my own. Neither dog has been off lead with me...yet. Strangers are just friends we havent met yet...thats my perspective anyway. I like trusting ppl. most ppl are NOT out to get you!

OP posts:
Couldthiswork · 06/05/2025 15:47

Most the people I’ve met on there are very experienced dog owners who fur one reason or another (normally because of living arrangements) can’t have their hen dog at the moment. I always meet up with them and we spend time all together before they build up to having him in their own

My kids are always worried they’ll be dog stealers! But tbh I think there must easier ways if you just want to nick a dog!

Totally agree.

faerietales · 06/05/2025 15:50

Well you may know that @lovenotwar149but they don’t, which is why I find it odd that they’d meet you once and just hand their dog over to you.

But then I’ve read too many horror stories about hobby sitters and walkers losing dogs, or locking them in cars or whatever to ever trust a website like that.

I also worry about things like insurance, who would be responsible for an injury or a fight, or what would happen if the collar snapped or the dog ran off or caused an accident.

I know I probably sound insanely paranoid but I’ve just read so many stories about where it’s gone wrong.

Rainbowshine · 06/05/2025 15:51

I guess it’s the difference between having a local teenager babysit your child compared to paying for someone who has a relevant qualification and experience, DBS check and insurance etc. Some people would be fine with a teenager and some would want the fully qualified person.

FredoandToto · 06/05/2025 15:52

I can’t imagine just handing my dog over to a random I’ve met briefly once. Too many risks.

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 16:01

I use it, as a borrower. We correspond via WhatsApp and I take the dog out 1-2 times a week for a good walk and play. I met the owner and dog at their home after contacting them and after that she was fine for me to take the dog at our agreed times. I can see why some people might be worried though.

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 16:05

Yes I can see that ppl wouldn't want to use it , for sure. I can also see some ppl would be happy to use to. Both owners of the 2 dogs I look after seem very responsible owners to me, I have been impressed particularly b/c both dogs are so well behaved. I trust me and I think ppl ,dogs too, can sense that in my energy

Couldthiswork · 06/05/2025 16:05

Sorry OP, in a see ti your question, we make arrangements over WhatsApp

And part of the annual fee for owners is to cover insurance

lovenotwar149 · 06/05/2025 16:06

ok thx ppl. I will carry on corresponding via WhatsApp too!

We used this quite a bit with our previous dog. He was an amazing dog, a fairly unusual and lovely breed so we always had people who wanted to look after him. Plus he was age 5/6+ when we used the service so he was good as gold. We had some lovely people who looked after him, one was a student who took him to the pub and let him sleep in her bedroom 😂 I have a puppy now and wouldn’t send her, it’s too young but maybe when she’s older.
