I've buckled again, I can't take the pressure of being on page 40 😄

It’s been so wonderful to see his confidence develop over such a short space of time! I love spending time with him but I love watching him just be a dog and do dog things

It is fascinating. I love seeing their character develop. They change such a lot in a short space of time, yet their essence remains the same.

@VanGoSunflowers I always joke that pupsy would just wiggle her bum at whoever it was as she's such a tart, but actually I think she'd pick up on my signs.

One day last year we were out on a lead walk at dusk walking down a snicket, when suddenly a man appeared behind us on his own. He probably wouldn't have done anything but he was walking quickly towards us and I said to her brightly, 'come on, let's go' and suddenly she stopped sniffing and walked beautifully to heel, nice and fast until we were back on a road with cars again. I think she knew that it was time to pay attention, and she wasn't yet a year old then.

Spaniels are sensitive little dogs. If there's ever shouting in the house, or even if I'm cross on the phone or whatever, she takes herself away to bed and curls up like a shell. It's very sweet but quite sad really as she seems to feel all of our emotions all the time – or mine, at least.

What a clever girl! It’s like they have a sixth sense.

It’s astounding how much they pick up off your energy. If you don’t mind me asking, how would she react if you were upset? I had a friend once whose dog would immediately put their head on your lap if you were sad. Beautiful and heartbreaking! Again - question to the group!

You watch them so intensely that you can see it can’t you? Again, it’s only been a couple of weeks with Pupper but occasionally, especially after a long nap, he appears to have ‘levelled up’

CoubousAndTourmalet · 20/06/2025 22:57

Interesting question @VanGoSunflowers

I say I've had 9 dogs, but the first three were when I was young and still lived with my parents. So here on the thread, I mainly refer to the 6 that I've had in this house.

My three boys were hugely sensitive. If I was upset, crying, ill, struggling in any way, they would always come and sit beside me to snuggle, give me a paw, rest their head on me, or just stand and lean against me. The girls not so much. Pyrenean females are far more independent and busy, less affectionate, or at least affection is always on their terms. They like to be with you but not cuddle. Brie, however, after being the worlds most independent minded puppy, and pretty much behaving like an adult bitch by 3 or 4 months old, is suddenly becoming more cuddly and sensitive. She definitely doesn't like raised voices. Even if we're just having an animated conversation about news or something, she will watch us intently. She likes things to be calm. She's highly intelligent and definitely seems to have a sense of humour. I'd say she's the most doggy bitch if that makes any sense. She has a lot of character. I'm now hopeful that she'll develop the nurturing side that the boys had.

With regard to protective instincts, I mostly just trust them to know right from wrong. It is, after all, a guarding breed. But they very rarely show any anger. I think I've mentioned here before that one of our males only ever growled once in 10 years, and that was to protect me on a walk. He suddenly veered across the path to place himself between me and a man walking towards us. I heard a low growl and realised my boy had his hackles up. It was totally out of character, he was a sweet, friendly soul. We still wonder to this day, just what he sensed, because we had walked that path dozens of times before and passed hundreds of people quite happily. It was very odd.

So, although I joke about Brie being defective because she so rarely barks, I'm pretty sure she would keep me safe from harm.

You will continue to be amazed by him. I do think you've made quite an exceptional start, it's wonderful to see that. You already seem to have a deep commitment to understanding how his mind works. Some people never have that connection with their dog, even years down the line!

brushingboots · 20/06/2025 23:05

@VanGoSunflowers If I was sitting on the sofa, say, and crying she would climb into my arms and get as close as possible and try and help in any way she can. She always knows! I’m with her so much of the time that she’s learned exactly what all of my different tones of voice mean.

LandSharksAnonymous · 21/06/2025 06:21

23.6 in my house right now.😥 Dogs walked and fed and all I want is to sleep in the shade but two of my four need their annual vaccinations today, so that’ll be fun but at least it’s not twatdog - him and the vets is not fun.

Hoping that everyone’s dogs stay cool today and aren’t wanky bellends. I made some carrot and strawberry juice popsicles last night for the dogs as a nice cold treat for today. Just call me Martha Stewart!😃

YorkshireFelix · 21/06/2025 08:19

It’s roasting already! I took V out at 7.30 and it was already 21 degrees. Dd has her school fair today and is doing a stall but she’s independent enough to not need me to be involved at all (thankfully we live 30 seconds walk from school!) so I’m staying indoors, keeping all the blinds closed and catching up on work. It’s very rare that my old house is warm but it’s just so stuffy at the minute, it’s horrible. DH slept downstairs with Vinny last night because it was slightly cooler.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 21/06/2025 08:38

I had Brie out for a few minutes just before 6, but it was already very warm. It's approaching 24 right now at 8.30. It's so frustrating!
Back door open, two fresh bowls of water down, not much else we can do.

But hey, we've reached the turning point of the year, and can now cheerfully say to people "winter is coming" 😁

SpanielsGalore · 21/06/2025 09:02

18° here. 🙄
Started off like this yesterday, promising to be a lovely day. Then clouded over.
When we moved here I read Moray had its very own little micro climate. I didn't realise that meant we didn't get the sun. Yesterday it was 26° in the Highlands, 24° in Aberdeen and 16° but feels like 14° here.
Great for the dogs, but I wouldn't mind a tan above corpse white.

VanGoSunflowers · 21/06/2025 09:43

@CoubousAndTourmalet - I found that post about all your dogs’ personalities really interesting! Isn’t it strange how they seem to pick up on things in other people that we don’t. I know a few people that would refuse to trust someone if their dog didn’t like them!
And thank you for the further words of encouragement- you’re very kind 😊

This is so sweet! I guess the way we watch them intensely, they watch us the same. They probably pick up on our little ‘tells’ better than we can.

VanGoSunflowers · 21/06/2025 09:46

Happy summer solstice everyone!
May the weather in your area be exactly what you need today! And if not, may you find respite from the heat 😂

I was woken at 5.30 this morning for a toilet trip and then we fell back to sleep on the sofa together and woke up at 8.45!! I was amazed! I really wonder if he is my spirit animal - loves sleep and food!

VanGoSunflowers · 21/06/2025 09:48

I do love the summer but I think my favourite is the changing of the seasons - I love watching Summer become Autumn, Autumn become winter and then, the best one, winter turning to spring

Bupster · 21/06/2025 13:15

We left for a walk at 7am and it was roasting by the time we got home at 8am. Bill of course refused to drink water at all on the walk. He is finding the heat really enervating - he's knackered and barky and restless all at once. I've got a friend staying which is disruptive to him too, bless his hooligan heart.

I got a Kurgo cooling coat the day before yesterday - tried it out at the dog park last night, when it was still very warm and muggy, and it does seem to make a difference. He doesn't like putting it on, but today he was starting to pant and look hot even in the house, and once I got him to wear it, he wasn't panting at all, even when he went out in the garden to bark at the neighbours (luckily they're lovely - yesterday evening I let him out the front door to say hello to them and he ran all the way into their house and was eyeing up the stairs 🙄).

I know he's my first dog so I'm probably paranoid and super-careful, but I'm a bit gobsmacked at some other people and their dogs - at the park last night, a friend was letting her ball-obsessed dog chase the ball - not far, but he was panting like mad. I saw a woman at lunchtime walking her dog to the post office on tarmac. And I know someone with a dog with a double coat who's on holiday in southern England right now and is taking the dog out at 9/10am. Madness.

LandSharksAnonymous · 21/06/2025 13:54

@Bupster totally agree! My house backs onto fields and hills and the amount of people I can see - literally right now - walking through the fields and up to the hills with their dogs is insane. Glad the cooling coat worked and Bill can get up to his usual shenanigans!

@SpanielsGalore do you want to swap? 😁It's 25.2 in my house at the moment and I think will only get warmer.... i'd sell my right kidney (or twatdog) for 18!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/06/2025 14:48

Enjoy the sun. Our forecast calls for 130mm of rain in the next 24 hours and heavy snow above 1600m.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/06/2025 14:49

But on a positive note, we can’t see the mountains due to low cloud, not wildfire smoke.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 21/06/2025 15:06

The social pariah would like to ask if anyone else's dog is off its food...

Brie is being so picky it's driving me mad. And she's now decided she has to be hand fed with every dainty morsel.

brushingboots · 21/06/2025 15:15

@CoubousAndTourmalet Not off food here – oddly, as usually she isn't fussed about food when it's hot – but could it be Brie's hormones? Could her season be due?

CoubousAndTourmalet · 21/06/2025 15:41

Thanks @brushingboots
It could be hormonal I suppose. She's 3 months post-season, which is why the cousins checked her over last week for a phantom or a pyo. But they reckoned no to both.
I'm not overly concerned; the others went off their food from time to time, and they're not big eaters as adults. She could just be self regulating. She has slimmed down noticeably over the last few weeks, but it's no bad thing, she was a very hefty pup.

I just wondered if the weather could be a factor at present, hence the question.

tizwozliz · 21/06/2025 15:56

We've had a smattering of rain here but it's only dropped the temp by a couple of degrees and increased the humidity.

Big pup is making her own entertainment...

@CoubousAndTourmalet ohhh I didn't know she'd had her season! Scratch that then. Good news about no phantom too.

I bet it's just the heat.

First proper season started three days before her first birthday, and she went completely nocturnal for two weeks 😬
