All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Pic of the handsome prick in question.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/09/2025 21:10

Woooo hoooooo... and yes please write a book, SURVIVING POD...

Or something wittier than that. I'll illustrate it :)

I intend to 👀

Good work continues. We went to another beach today and Pod was wild with joy. He did run up to a spaniel and try and engage it in play which I don't think the owner was thrilled about but other than that it was good.

Pod gets treats for going on his bed while we're eating. So he has now taken to standing on it at other times and yelling to get us to notice what a good boy he's being.

Pod has a new sighthound collar which I bought in a vain effort to stop people mistaking him for a Doberman with cropped ears but the first walk with it on three separate people mistook him for one, although a man with two Bridlington Whippets at the end said "Is that a..... [I was waiting for the word Doberman].... Podenco?". I was delighted.

Pod says hello.

Just wondering how anyone could think that those ears have been cropped - what on earth do they think they could have been like to start with?

Do I mean cropped?? I mean the thing they do in America to Dobies and Danes to make them look wellard. Where they make flappy ears into sticky up ones.

OP posts:
eggandonion · 14/09/2025 23:31

They could be artificial ears! Isn't he doing so well?

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/09/2025 04:30

Yeah, cropped is what has happened to those poor Dobie ears, Dane ears etc that should be gloriously flappy, and are instead trimmed and then taped and posted up whilst the cartilege hardens... all that pain for months, for a tiny pupper... Ugh.

So yep... I dread to THINK how big they imagine his ears must have been for those to have been cropped and posted!

eggandonion · 15/09/2025 16:49

Its lovely to see dogs with wagging tails who would have been docked
a few years ago.

Apologies for not reading all 4 of your threads, have you had him DNA tested to see what’s in the mix?

Pretty sure he hasn’t had DNA testing.

Hope things are going okay @HangingOver with you and the newly obedient Pod.

So this is a very "me" things to do.... But I did pay for it, it came back as an invalid sample, I did it again, put it in the envelope to send back and it's still there 9 months later 😐

Question: I cannot keep this Pod warm at night. His fur is soooooo short and thin (his Pod pals are all the same, you can see their lovely pink skin underneath).

Even though our house is probably warmer than most, when I come down in the morning his ears are freezing and he's curled up absolutely tiny.

The challenges I have are: he won't wear anything for long without eating it. Potentially I could dress him in pajamas when he's very nearly asleep??

He likes being under a blanket but he's a bit of a fidget so he shrugs it off overnight.

A dog bed is out of the question as he will dismember it in seconds.

He's still currently not allowed upstairs, where it is warmer.

DP doesn't really want Pod upstairs. He spent most of his marriage to his ex wife being elbowed in the face by a very clingy Gordon setter at night and it affected his sleep. I do sort of see but at the same time I feel terrible feeling his cold ears in the morning.

I'm trying to get Pod used to duvets by coming down in the morning and wrapping him up in mine, which he adores. When he's sleepy enough, the ripping obsession goes away.

I was thinking perhaps Pod could sleep on the bed in the spare room which is lovely and warm and I could climb in with him in the mornings and he could maybe go back downstairs during the day (especially if we're out). He may not want to but it would be good for him to have the option.

Now just to gently win round DP although he's away next week

Would a heated mat be an option or would he trash it? You can get them for dogs and cats, he might not eat it as it’s not fluffy, (obviously he’d have to be heavily supervised,to begin with) but he may catch on quite quickly to it being somewhere warm to lie.

HangingOver · 27/09/2025 09:18

I love you for your faith in Pod's intellect.

This is the dog that lies in the sun til he's practically dying then whines piteously while making eye contact with me when there is shade CENTIMETRES away 😂

You might have answered this somewhere up thread but would he wear an Equafleece coat with legs? That would keep him toasty. You might have to talk to Equafleece about size needs.

bluegreygreen · 27/09/2025 10:48

I think it would be very confusing for Pod to be allowed upstairs sometimes but not others, and unfair on DP with that history.

Would a weighted blanket work (less likely to be dislodged with fidgeting in sleep? And is he really cold (not sleeping properly), or is it just his ears (which will always be colder anyway out of any covers)?

Edit to add - agree the heated pad may be worth trying

It's how we taught him to be trustworthy in the rest of the house. He didn't used to be allowed in the living room unsupervised and he eventually got used to it enough to be left alone in there when we're out.

It's so hard to tell how cold he is. He had shrugged the blanket off last night but then sort of wiggled up against it later in the night.

Do other people's doggies ears feel icy in the mornings? His snoot and paws felt cold too. It's weird because it's not that cold in there but maybe it's drafts.

We did have a heat pad but I kept chewing it so I took it away. I think I've still got it somewhere.
