All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

and then, with five minutes left til the next field users were booked to come in, grabbing the bag of spare bandages I'd brought incase he wagged his bandage off and legging it at top speed around the field with bandages and gauze trailing like loos roll. I could practically hear him cackling, the little fucker.

😆I’m sorry but the mental picture that paints for me is hilarious! You’ve got a talent for writing. My brain is trying to work out what song would be playing over the top of the scene, like one of the chaos scenes from “Marley and Me”. 🐎🧻🦕🍖

I’m sorry that STBFIL has taken a turn. That must be hard for DP.

Oreos are vegan aren’t they? No milk? My lactose intolerant nieces can happily eat them.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/06/2025 03:36

All I can say is, moments like that are filed in my 'when I write my best selling 'fleas n all' account of dog ownership, this is going in there' mental database!

About five minutes after it happened I did see the funny side, once I'd got my breath back after legging it after him collecting all the mess and yelling "come back you bastard". The people after us were really nice actually and their fat Labradors busily tidied up all the scattered treatos.

Oh those Labradors must have been ecstatic! You will find they will approach you & Pod hopefully if they run into you again.

HangingOver · 09/06/2025 11:15

These dogs are driving me MAAAAAAAAAD.

Wiggle barks multiple times in the night and doesn't calm down until you come and comfort her. Pod has decided its his dearest ambition to shag her which is leading to squabbles. They've ALL decided they want the same ball even though there are multiple identical ones all over the house. So I have to keep them separate which means they all in their little prisons barking while I'm trying to work and they're setting each other off.

DP is at his absolute wits end because he's so stressed with work anyway and all the barking and broken sleep isn't helping.

I feel mean saying it but I really can't wait for the girls to go home. Melty is an angel but Wiggle is not coping and it's all making Pod into a beast.

Oh dear. More stress. What a difficult situation.😟

That sounds tricky.

Is Wiggle desexed?

eggandonion · 09/06/2025 13:32

They are being as good as they can dealing with complicated lifestyle changes!
My cousin's dalmatian boy loved to try to make out with her siamese cat girl despite their respective operations!

rainbowruthie · 09/06/2025 13:46

@HangingOver You are doing a brilliant job in the most difficult of circumstances - give yourself a huge pat on the back!

LadyGrillingSole · 09/06/2025 15:00

You're doing your best, Hanging, and I'm sure it's massively appreciated 💐

The dogs must be pretty confused by the big changes they've had to adjust to, and I am full of admiration for the effort you and Mr Hanging are going to for your family.

You're in the trenches right now, but you'll look back and be proud of yourselves ❤

I've just realised I've been using Piriteze on Pod instead of Piraton... apparently the difference is important. He's scratched his face so hard it's bleeding. The vet reckons it's pollen as he's not had this before, and another Pod friend suffers in the exact same way this time of year. So between the giant comedy bandage on his tail and his scabby face he's looking every bit the hard done by street hound. You'd never guess he has a loving Mum who spends all her time and money trying to navigate the delicate balance of his gut flora and his explosive emotions. He's got little blobs of savlon all over his face so it looks like he's cut himself shaving.

Pod is no longer allowed access to the girls in the house except under strict supervision. Poor Wiggle is terrified of him continually trying to shag her. He's finally realised that it's best to avoid the snapping end and now shows his affection by kind of barging into her from the side like a polo pony in a ride-off.

Still, apart from one micro-wuff in the middle of the night everyone allowed me to sleep last night which is a vast improvement!

All being well with STBFIL, I'm hoping they'll go home either this weekend or next so the end is in sight.

I must admit, much as they are really sweet girls I'm not sure I would have a spaniel. There's something about the frantic, scrabbling, wagging, panting energy that gives me anxiety. Pod is much more aloof by comparison (in fact, he barely acknowledges me most of the time).

I'm praying the girls leaving will coincide with a general decline in the unholy amount of noise Pod makes these days. He's started kicking off at dogs on the other side of the road again; first big dogs, then black dogs, now just any dog bigger than a weasel. Oh he also saw a rabbit out the car window yesterday and the sounds that came out of him was quite extraordinary. Sort of like a piglet caught in a waste disposal unit.

He's currently sulking on his little chez long next to me in the kitchen, having whinged at me to drag it over into the one patch of sunlight in the room. I love these little moments where he tells me something and I actually understand him. DP said when he needed his Evening Poop Walk yesterday he nudged the back door keys with his snoot and then nudged his harness. My heart!!

Pirateze/Piraton/Tomato/Potato - really, would anyone know there's a difference? I wouldn't 😕 Definitely goes in the " Not Hangings fault " pile!

Sounds like everyone, human and k9, will be happy for everything to be back to normal. I'm sure it will brighten FIL's day when he's surrounded by spaniel loopiness 😍 Nothing promotes wellness like the love of a dog.

I'm sure Pod will love being mum and dad's only hound again, and hopefully things will be a little calmer for you all 😊

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/06/2025 12:57

I only know theres a difference in Piriteze vs Piriton via the same error. Piriton contains chlorphenamine, Piriteze is cetirizine...

Fingers x that after spanners go home, he'll decompress and improve, I suspect this is all trigger stacking and just some avoidance/CC'ing to seeing shit and you'll see a rapid improvement!

HangingOver · 11/06/2025 14:11

Yeah apparently Piraton works better so I'll be trying that tomorrow. Also I can't pretend the fact it causes drowsiness might be a short term help.

Forgot to say wiggle headbutted me on the nose yesterday and I saw stars. Heard it crack and everything. If you look closely on the photo on Instagram you can see a bruise and the start of racoon eyes 🤣

That's interesting what you say about the spaniels @HangingOver because I was thinking of getting one in future.

But it resonated what you said about their energy and I'm not sure I'm cut out for that aspect of them either.

No one could accuse a Lab of being aloof (my current pup and previous one). But they are self sufficient to a large degree, or at least mine have been. They sleep a lot when nothing going on and self settle very easily in the house & outside it. They don't make a fuss about much so by contrast I think I would find the spaniels you are looking after hard work.

LadyGrillingSole · 11/06/2025 15:49

Well, so much for my comment about dogs promoting wellness ...
Unless they're headbutting you, Hanging 🤕

Pod, you great gangly nutter 😂

LadyGrillingSole · 11/06/2025 15:52

Oh no, sorry Pod, it was Wiggle!

Get a Pod. Unless they're upset about something all the time you won't even know they're home 🤣

For those interested in maths, I have calculated that, from a standing start, 16m on a hill is sufficient distance for an 18 months old Podenco to reach the velocity required to fully remove a human arm.

I did have to let go of the lead this time and hope for the best. He was running full speed downhill after the rescue chopper and if I'd tried to hang on we both would have got very very hurt.

I feel your pain. Bill hooked his long line under my left foot yesterday, wrapped it round my ankle, and made me do the splits.
