Dog will not take pills

I have tried hiding them in all her favourite foods, crushing them up into food and forcing them down the back of her throat and keeping her mouth closed. Today it’s taken me until 4pm to force her to swallow 1 tablet and she’s meant to have 5 a day.
She’s had many seizures simply because I cannot get meds in her then we have an awful 12+ hours. It’s not her fault but I’m rapidly running out of patience and go from feeling cross with her to feeling awful ☹️

I wrap my dogs supplements in wafer thin ham and instruct him to swallow.
If I turn my head to prepare the next piece, he has a genius way of holding it at the side of his mouth before spitting out 😂

Yes, to popping the tablets into round 3 or 4 of the ham/chicken/cheese etc, followed be a couple more as a treat.
It's our morning routine 🐶

I used to crush the pill between two spoons and mix with butter. Peanut butter would be better, the crunchy kind. Hope you get it sorted.

Butter or cream cheese 👍🏻

For clarity - blowing air from your mouth (best directed to the nostrils of the dog), bot a short sharp blow with a baseball bat!

Thank goodness! 🤣

This does make me chuckle!

My dog has had two lots of surgery since the end of January, loads of medication required to be taken several times a day. She's so food obsessed that I just feed her tablets like treats and she hoovers them up.

She's a strange animal! 😆

What worked for ages with my dog (until he got too ill and went off food completely) was covering the pills with Lick e Lix cat treats. It’s like a thick yogurt you can buy in different flavours (and Lidl’s do their own cheap version). Our dog found it really palatable and would lick the pill up with the treat.

Currently got both dogs on various meds so being their nurse 4-5 times a day! My trick is manuka honey on a teaspoon with the tablet in it works nearly every time and the manuka honey is good for them too!

Have you tried Royal Canin Pill Assist? We were having a terrible time getting our cat to eat pills, and the vet recommended these - they come in a cat version and a dog version. You pop the pill in a squishable treat pocket. Expensive, but they really work. You can order them online via pets at home or Amazon.

Airwaterfire · 10/04/2025 23:17

They do small-medium and medium-large dog:

@longtompot

I am very glad that method helped but sorry your dog is so poorly. I hope it continues to help get the pills down and that she stays out of pain.💐

Thank you. We said our final goodbyes to her this afternoon and I am, well, bereft💔

Primula cheese in a tube…the ham one

My old git seemed to know every trick in the book for (not) taking medication. I used to do thr pills in back of throat method but once I watched him move the pill around is mouth so he could spit it out when I wasn’t looking. He actually looked guilty the old bastard. He knew if I hid it in something. Most of the time, where I could, I used liquid meds and squirted the back of his throat with a syringe. Other times when it was pills I’d just have to watch him for 10 mins to see what amd when he would spit things out.

god that dog was a legend.

I am so sorry to hear that. It’s the worst, isn’t it.

I am so sorry. I had to say goodbye to my dog in October and I am still grieving him. I picture him, free of all cares, romping about with my other long gone dogs but I still would like them all back.
