If you have two or more big dogs...

Can I ask you about your vehicles? I'm in the market for a new one (although by new, I mean decidedly second hand as sooner or later it will look like a farm truck and I can't afford a car that costs as much as a house ten years ago).

I have two greyhounds whose favourite thing is to be chauffeured around endlessly. One of them is getting a bit old so struggles leaping in and out. He is also possessive of space so putting them together with no divider wouldn't work, and they're bags of bones so need something comfy to lie on. We have no kids so the car can 3/4 be full of dog. We also go on trips in the UK with them so looking for something suitable for long mileage journeys.

Thanks!

We have a RAV4 for our two labs. Loads of room to divide the boot in 2. It's also not that high, about 10cm higher threshold than our old estate.

When the little one was younger and couldn't be trusted not to try and start games of bitey face en route we had one in the boot and one on the back seat.

Transk9 do great car crates. We use a dog guard and tailgate from Barjo in our mitsubishi outlander. You can get dividers as well. Also have a dog ramp which folds in half, need that for our older dog.

I have a Hyundai i10 and can easily fit three border collie sized dogs in it - two on the back seat with belts and harnesses and one in the boot with a guard.

Beautiful hounds @tizwozliz ! I wish mine would snuggle in together like that. I think too many years of sharing kennels has made mine a bit grumpy.

Thanks for the websites @StrongTea - those look interesting! I need to get the tape out and measure our current beds to see how narrow we can go.

@biscuitsandbooks wow that's impressive, the i10s look quite compact.

@Fibrous they're surprisingly spacious!

It's never let me down mechanically either, been a fantastic little car.

We are headed for a Ford toureno next. I found lots of the dog show people have these!

Either that or a VW transporter.

I have big dogs though!

I can fit a very large dog crate into my Renault van, with room for three large dogs.

Cluckycluck · 12/03/2025 05:55

Pick up truck with a split crate. That way the seats in cab remain free and there is still space in the bed for things.

Thanks for the input! Don't think a van type thing would work for me as I need to use it for long distance work drives too, and I don't want to spend a fortune on fuel. Also live in a terraced house with just on street parking so my neighbours would probably go mad if I parked a van in front of their windows.
