First time dog owner, 18 month old cavapoo. He barks at any deliveries, anyone walking past the house, hearing any other dogs barking. But weirdly never when out. Any advice?

Is this when you are home or when he is Home Alone? Removing access to the window would help...
Are you listening ndn???
Leaves big barky fucker on a chair at the window.... 😡

You should at least be seen to be taking this seriously so no access to front of the house to see people and no leaving him at home alone . Also if he’s in the garden get him in at first bark . You can teach dogs to speak on command which also helps to shut them up .

Does this happen all the time, or just when you're out?

I would block his access to the windows and think about playing white noise or leaving the radio on to reduce the amount of noise coming from outside.

squashyhat · 02/03/2025 15:33

It literally says it doesn't happen when out in the OP 🙄

That reads as referring to the dog being out. The posters are asking if it happens when OP is out and dog is home alone

And most of us took that to mean "he doesn't bark when out of the house" 🙄

Crate when you’re out so he can’t access the windows. Anti bark collar. Not the electric shock ones but you can get ones that let out a high pitch beep and they buzz when they bark. They do work

Losingmymind85 · 02/03/2025 15:36

You can block access to the window , or buy the frosted film you can place directly on the window. This will (hopefully) block dogs view but allow you to keep your light.
. Not much you can do about the dog barking when someone comes to door, but you need to train dog to stop barking on command.

It's fucking miserable living next to a loud barking dog. Please listen to your neighbours and take steps to address

oakleaffy · 02/03/2025 15:44

That is a hideously yappy mix.
A woman in Australia had her yappy poodle x poisoned by a what they assumed was a neighbour- he didn’t survive, so it really is something to work on for the dog’s safety

I’ve never had barkers, unless there was a genuine threat- but I have seen and heard dogs yapping as we walk past houses, so blocking vision and sound of passersby is essential.

Some people use anti
bark citronella collars - but have read of people buying sonic anti bark deterrents-

Best thing is to have a non yappy breed type and to exercise it very well so it’s settled indoors.

Try the calming adaptil plug in. It helps create a calmer, less stressy pup. Also white noise, R4 for us, helps to muffle outside noise.

HedgehogBob · 02/03/2025 15:48

If you try all the suggestions and your dog still keeps barking maybe hire a dog behaviourist, we have one for our rescue, they are really helpful.

I do feel for your neighbours. Our ndn's 2 dogs bark all the time when they are out and it drives me insane but they don't give a shit so little I can do sadly.

DaisyChain505 · 02/03/2025 16:21

Shut curtains/blinds/shutters.

Keep classic fm on the radio when you’re out.

Put a sign on your door asking delivery people not to knock/ring doorbell as you have a reactive dog inside.

Newpeep · 02/03/2025 17:32

Odd bits of barking are quite acceptable IMO. Eg once a day at the post.

At windows etc no. You may need to block access or put film on them.

You also need to look at this holistically. How much and what exercise and enrichment are they getting? A tired dog is he really a happier dog as long as it’s the right kind of enrichment.

He doesn’t do it when you are not there are there is no one there to tell 😉 There are some good resources to help on the dog training and advice Facebook group. It’s very common in young dogs but is very trainable.

DaisyChain505 · 02/03/2025 18:29

Also you haven’t given much info about how long your dog is alone for and if they have a good amount of exercise every day.

They should be being walked in the morning, once in the day and again in the evenings if you’re out at work all day.

Frosted film on the windows is a super idea!!
