8 week diet trial

Vet has suggested DDog goes on 8 weeks of Purina Hypoallergenic food, as long history of rubbish poops (think Mr Whippy ice cream)

I'm not a vet, but I personally think it's stress related (chronic colitis), and wanted advice on how to help/manage it

In Jan this year I started him on probiotics (brought from the vet) and an Adaptil plug in... quite quickly the poop situation improved 🙏

Come end of Jan both products ran out, there was about 4 days without the Probiotics (and I didn't replace the Adaptil... important)

Poops got bad again (even once back on the probiotics)

Desperation purchased another Adaptil ... week later, better poops but still not great - and that's where we're at currently

So vet appointment on Weds, she turned her nose up at his current diet (which another vet previously said was ok?!??) and she wants him on a strict diet to rule out food intolerance

I've ordered the food, as why pay all that money to the vet and not take her advice... even though I don't feel it's the issue 😩

I did specifically ask for a vet referral to a CAB, but she didn't really know how that worked 😞 just kept on about the diet

Am turning to you lovely lot as recently lost a close friend whom was my dog anxiety sounding board/voice of reason... so am feeling particularly at sea. Just want the best for my DDog

Tia

I’m not a fan of buying Vets very expensive food, which they obviously make money on. If it’s colitis, you want to try adding more fibre into the food, you can get powder to add to food or try tinned plain pumpkin, this is great at firming up 💩. With my dog, he cannot have too much chicken as we get runny 💩 although he’s fine with turkey.

IBD n dogs like in humans is often multi-factorial so yes stress is part of it, but diet is often part of it too.
I would try the 8 weeks - after all you have bought the food- if it helps combine it with adaptil and hopefully that's your solution. If it doesn't you can feel more confident in saying yes stress is the major factor.

I would at least do the eight week trial and rule out food intolerances first. It won't do anyone any harm.
