Whippet puppy is not a girl - boy whippet with my entire 8YO boy

Hello dog worshippers,

We have an 8 year old male whippet. He's not neutered but isn't aggressive at all. He's very sweet and still loves zoomies in the park. He's used to other dogs from living in a big city - though less so since we moved out of town a few years ago. He's great with the two male cats and the chickens, pretty bombproof. He does get a fed-up look on his face when my mums bouncy lurcher comes over, but they do play and lie together.

Cue me wanting another whippet before he gets too old to play with it. Found a delightful looking girl whippet puppy with a nearby breeder just born. All good so far. Very excited.

She's just messaged me to say she made a mistake and puppy is in fact a boy. Do I still want him? Offered deposit back, v apologetic.

I don't know what to do as I'm sort of imprinted on this puppy now and had it in my heart! I don't know how two males will get on - I'm happy to have him neutered ( but not the older one as Its a bit late for him and I don't want to change him) .

Any experiences - will they be ok after a while?

😂 She mistook it for a girl!?

Run, OP. She's having you on - she found someone willing to pay more for a girl and has given the puppy to them instead. That or she's an incompetent fuckwit who shouldn't breed goldfish, let alone dogs.

That being said, two male dogs can 100% get on.

But I wouldn't get a puppy from this breeder for all the nukes in North Korea.

CagneyNYPD1 · 28/02/2025 17:33

Breeder is lying. Or a complete fool.

She got a better offer for the girl or she has decided to keep the girl for breeding.

Get your money back and walk away.

takeitbacknowyo · 28/02/2025 17:33

I don't understand how she wouldn't have known? Surely you can see their bits? They would have said when the vets checked him over? I'm so confused 😂

Anyway, I had an older dog who got on just fine with a puppy.

My thoughts exactly . You will definitely not be getting the puppy you’ve already seen , assuming you’ve seen it . Run , run fast .

Nameftgigb · 28/02/2025 17:54

She absolutely has not mistook that puppy’s sex, you just can’t. It’s immediately obvious from birth. You need to have a little think about what they’re trying to pull here

Nameftgigb · 28/02/2025 17:55

Also I’d never have the same sex dogs personally, though I know loads of people do and it’s fine. But I almost guarantee that your older dog will have a completely different relationship to a female than to another male, even if it’s neutered

ginasevern · 28/02/2025 18:09

She's lying and if she isn't then she knows nothing about dogs and I'd be very concerned about any in her care. Is she breeding these poor creatures in a garden shed by any chance?

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/02/2025 18:13

Eh?! That's a bit mad. However I've always had entire dogs together with never an issue.

Catgotyourbrain · 28/02/2025 18:14

No I am 100% sure its a genuine mistake. She has pedigree dogs, a private Facebook group for just the puppy owners of this litter, another private facebook group for previous litters with testimonials going back years, owners of now-adult puppies sharing content. Does live facebook of her living room as well as garden. I had to fill out a long form to show I was genuine myself and connect on facebook. I couldn't be more sure she is genuine. Its a large litter and they are only a few days old

Theunamedcat · 28/02/2025 18:16

An experienced person wouldn't make such an obvious mistake surely?

ScottBakula · 28/02/2025 18:30

Ok so you are convinced that she is genuine and honest and very experienced, then how on earth did she mistake the sex of the pup ?
That just doesn't happen , so either;

The fb page is fake and she's a con artist.

She is very very inexperienced but I think even a child could tell the difference

She has had a better offer for the pup you wanted.

The pup you wanted has died

There are no pups at all , it's all fake.

She has over sold or not as many pups were born as she expected

Some animals are hard to sex when they are young but dogs , absolutely not.

LaceWingMother · 28/02/2025 18:31
  1. Don't buy from a breeder
  2. Be reasonable and get your dog neutered
WarrenPearce · 28/02/2025 18:45

I just don't know how on earth it's possible to make this mistake, as a primary school aged child I could tell the difference!

Floralnomad · 28/02/2025 18:49

I’m not sure what FB has to do with being a good breeder , most of the biggest puppy farmers have a good social media presence. A good breeder knows how many dogs and bitches she has in a litter .

CerealPosterHere · 28/02/2025 19:01

When I got my girl puppy I wasn’t sure when I looked at her bits if she was a girl or not. And I’m a midwife so I know what human bits look like, I’m not thick. I posted a photo on here at the time and there was a big debate with some saying girl and some boy. So maybe sometimes when young it’s not clear. Shes very obviously a girl now.

Came to say exactly this. It was very obvious as soon as each pup was born that they were a boy or a girl when our dog had pups.

CerealPosterHere · 28/02/2025 19:04

Oh maybe puppy genital photos are banned these days 😂

Have you seen them?

KeenOtter · 28/02/2025 20:03

No idea about the breeder.

It is fine to have dogs of the same sex living together. Temperament permitting.

At the moment I have 5 boys, some entire and some castrated and 1 girl no issues at all.

I have had several bitches and several dogs together.

Corgiowner · 28/02/2025 20:28

I’ve always had male dogs never neutered them and always had at least two I’ve never had problem.
i agree with others a knowledgeable reputable breeder would be perfectly able to sex a puppy at birth.
My dogs have always come from exceedingly reputable long standing breeders with an excellent track record in the show ring none have any Facebook presence. Perhaps I should add corgis are often bred by older people (like me) so maybe they don’t see Facebook as a thing (like me 🤣).

Bollocks is it.

I’ve bred for twenty years, my mum thirty before me, and we never once mis-sexed a puppy.

Facebook group? Oh yeah. Up there with ‘5* licence’ when it comes to how legitimate they are. You’ve fallen for the oldest con in the book and it’s genuinely shocking you still think she’s legitimate and competent after this. Just because she has a Facebook group, or has ‘great testimonies’ doesn’t mean she is a good breeder.

But, please do go ahead and support someone who is either incompetent, or a puppy farmer, or both.

tabulahrasa · 01/03/2025 13:43

Her mistaking the sex and the fact that you’ve paid a deposit already on a puppy only a few days old would make me suspect she isn’t a great breeder tbh.

But as far as your actual question…

There’s a few breeds I’d be wary about having 2 boys - but whippets aren’t one of them.

It absolutely is clear.
