Anyone with experience of eye removal?

11 yr old dog has been diagnosed with glaucoma and urgently needs eye removal. Is already blind in the eye. But pressure has been rapidly increasing from 38 to 80 to 115 even on 3 meds (these are readings Fri, Mon, Tuesday).

I understand we need to do this and it's in her best interest. Already blind in the eye, she won't be going through new vision loss.

Any advice for her recovery? We will have the eye sent to pathology to learn as much as possible and set plan for her remaining eye (pressure only at 11, thankfully).

Eye removal will be tomorrow. Any advice or stories of success wikl be greatly appreciated.

One of our dogs had an eye removed, was also due to glaucoma. Op went well and she coped well. Had no sight in the other eye so was totally blind. She was still off lead in the field with my other dogs, could get herself out and in the back door to potter around in the garden. If we were out for a lead walk I used a harness for a bit more control. It’ll be an instant relief for her as it’s like having a severe headache. Good luck.

Our little terrier had exactly the same, ans she copes perfectly well. She was so much happier when it was out, and apart from a bit of pain relief and more cuddles was absolutely the same!

Hope all goes well today. I’ve had many foster dogs that have had eyes removed for various reasons and they all recovered well with no issues.

No experience but I hope it all goes well. I walk a blind dog and she copes amazingly!

Our 11 yr old dog had her eye removed. It was quite complicated so she went to a specialist opthamologist and it ended up taking much longer than he thought. He was very worried about her recovery and the possibility of complications. She however, was not 🤣 The day after the operation, complete with sky dish on her head, she was most put out that she wasn’t allowed to go walks, she kept banging said sky dish on the door 🤦‍♀️ She recovered absolutely beautifully, no complications whatsoever and was her usual happy self throughout. The only thing now is I can’t let her off lead because she runs into trees/fences/other people (vision in her remaining eye isn’t great) but she is still loving her life.

Not for the same reason but I’ve had a dog that had an eye removed.

He was on lead until the stitches came out… so about a week or so? But he was fine long before that, he was only out of sorts for a couple of days really, as soon as the anaesthetic was out of his system and the wound started to heal he was totally normal… with slightly less depth perception

long term he was totally fine, bit rubbish at catching toys at that side, but fine to be off lead etc.

Thank you all for the wonderful assurances and well wishes. She has been dropped off for surgery and will be picking her up this afternoon. The techs at the surgery kept exclaiming that they had seen such a happy dog! She didn't stop wagging her tail and wiggling for everyone. So, hopefully this bodes well for surgery and recovery.

Again - thank you all!

Quick update ... best girl is now home and finally resting! She doesn't understand why she still can't eat. The bruising is starting to show on her little shaved face and eye area. Let the recovery begin and be speedy!
