5 year old whippet - so worried about osteosarcoma

Our 5 year old beautiful whippet started to limp and lose weight in November last year.

The vet wasn't worried about the limp (couldn't feel any joint issues) so gave him a month of anti-inflammatories and pain relief and said to give him an extra meal each day and bring him back in a month. The pain relief helped him as when he had it in his system, he hardly limped..

He'd dropped another kg when I took him back a month later. She referred him to a specialist vet re. the weight loss who did lots of testing and diagnosed him as B12 deficient and needing a hypoallergenic diet. She also wasn't worried about limp and wanted to treat the weight loss first and for us to come back in 6-8 weeks when

A month later and he's not gained any weight (but not anymore weight loss) but his limp is now so bad he can't weight bear on it and he's hopping on 3 legs. He's not really up for playing with our other whippet, but he's still eating and has a good appetite.

I'm so scared he's got oesteosarcoma. I'm also feeling frustrated that he's been seen 4 times now, at a huge cost, and they've all basically ignored his leg.

Does this sound like it could be? He's got an x-Ray (finally) tomorrow morning

Just seen the recent photo, he’s very thin. I hope you get answers. I can’t imagine he’d have lost weight like that with a corn.

If X-rays ok then check pads for corns, very common in pointy dogs and can make them quite lame

This is very true. Long dogs and corns are a nightmare and they can be very very lame as a result.

If it's an osteosarc, it is very obvious on X Ray. It gives a classic 'starburst' appearance and they are very painful.

Have you ever asked for the leg XRay OP?

In a practice I worked at, a couple repeatedly asked for their dog to be XRayed as they were sure he had chewed up a shoe. The vet refused, adamant the issue was renal failure and it was but secondary to the piece of shoe blocking the dogs intestine! It did not go well.

Always ask for what you want at the vet, dentist, doctor etc. is my advice.

It's been 6 days since the Op said she had a Vet appointment and she would update, I suspect it was not good news.

These were my thoughts 😔But I truly hope that wasn't the case. I do hope she will come back at some point to update or at least to get some support if things didn't go well.

Lovemyassistancedog · 27/02/2025 23:18

The dog really did look poorly. Sending love to the OP and her dog, whatever is happening.

Testing to see if this worked as my reply seems to have disappeared x

How strange, not sure what happened with my.reply.

Sorry for going AWOL but it's been so tough here. My baby boy went to rainbow bridge 🌈 😪 He didn't have osteosarcoma but had advanced stomach cancer and a broken toe (hence the limp). There are no words to explain our heart ache. Just 5 years old.
RIP darling boy x

Loveallaroundyou · 24/03/2025 16:51

Thinking of you. It’s so hard to have to make the decision to pts, but it was the kindest thing you could do for him.

CarrieMoonbeams · 24/03/2025 16:58

Oh your poor boy 😢. I'm so sorry to read that. Absolutely devastating 💔

I’m so sorry Op.

Lovemyassistancedog · 27/03/2025 16:59

I'm truly sorry. I hope you had a good life together while he was with you and that, in time, you'll feel comfort from those happy memories. I'm glad he's no longer suffering but sorry that you are grieving.

PixieMcGraw · 27/03/2025 17:10

I'm so sorry. How devastating for you. He was a beautiful boy and you did your best for him. It's so hard. Lots of love x
