My dog has never barked.

I have a 6 month old Labrador and she has never barked!

She can be quite vocal and makes whining noises and other funny noises when trying to get attention, but if another dog barks she never barks back and I can honestly say I've never heard her.

She had a check at the vets last week, she's healthy and thriving, but the vet didn't really answer when I asked him about the barking.

Any ideas?

A relative had a gorgeous staffie that often stayed with my parents. He never barked. He didn't even bark when my Dad forgot the dog was staying and closed the door leaving him outside in the rain. He just sat there quietly and waited (thankfully not for too long). He did vocalise though and would chunter on all the time, just never barked.

As he was a rescue, we thought he might have been badly treated when he barked. He did cower when someone rolled up a newspaper whilst playing with him.

Our Labrador did not bark for years and years. Then when we were on a ferry and he thought my DH was leaving him (he was just going to the toilet!) he barked. It was so deep and loud everyone turned to look! He now barks at birds on the fence and if he wants to come back in and we have not noticed. Very rarely though. We met another Labrador owner and they said their Labrador had never barked.

I grew up with a Lab like this. He barked once that I can remember and scared himself 🤣. He made lots of grunty 'talking' noises and was otherwise very communicative. I wouldn't worry!

My dog didn’t bark until he was about 18 months - he’s 3 now and will bark on occasion but not often at all, he always looks a bit surprised by himself when he makes a noise 😂

We had a rescued Springer Spaniel that never barked. He did, however, howl very loudly if left alone

Please can we swap?! That is all..

Mine barks if a mouse farts a mile away 😫 we taught him to ‘speak’ and ‘whisper’ on command, but we haven’t found the mute button yet!

I don't think my dog did either until he was quite a few months old. He still doesn't bark much now

My Boss had a Labrador that never barked. He had something wrong with is vocal chords or whatever but he was fine. But he never barked and loved a full life expectancy...12/13. So keep an eye on him

Our late Labrador very rarely barked, not even when the door knocked. He was so quiet. He did bark and growl one time when we were at the local park. Our toddler was pottering around on the grass by us where we were sat having a picnic and an off the lead Alsatian came running towards her from behind us. Our Labrador who was on a extending lead but lying down beside us noticed it coming in our direction got up and stood in front of our little girl between her and the dog, and was growling and barking until it ran away back across the field to it's owner the other side of the field. He was in proper protective mode. We picked up our little girl but our Labrador made sure he was in front of us the whole time. He loved our children and after that we knew that he would protect them fiercely. He got such a fuss once he had warned the Alsatian off. He was a very special dog. We have a different breed now and she barks every time the door knocks the door or is on the drive.

Ours never barked for many months as a puppy but now doesn't shut up 🤣

My lab barked from around one year. He shocked himself one day, wish he hadn't learned how to...,. the rest is history

7 year old Golden retriever here. Very rarely barks. Last time he barked was months ago when a new road sign went up on our walk.
He does grumble and make funny noises at his toys though.
