Can we talk about Italian greyhounds?

I’m contemplating a new dog and possibly an Italian greyhound. I used to have a full size greyhound so am used to the drama llama, teeth chattering squealing.

questions I have;

is the toilet/house training as bad as I’ve read?

how fragile are they? I read about one that broke both front legs jumping off a sofa….is that common? Or very rare?

teeth issues? my greyhound was plagued with dental issues and cost a fortune and ultimately died when at the vets for a dental. Are Italian greyhounds as bad?

Recall? I’m assuming can’t be as bad as a greyhound, especially if getting from a puppy and putting the training in. I really want to be able to walk any dog off lead (in rural areas).

anything else i should know?

my dd's mini iggy IS NOT housetrained and is now 4+ years old.

Aggh, I keep seeing stuff like this! Crazy that certain breeds can be seemingly so difficult. I currently have a bichon and they have a reputation for being hard to house train and it did take maybe a year before she was consistently trustworthy.

My ex had an Italian grey hound and she was a lovely little dog. Incredibly intelligent, affectionate and all around wonderful. She could hold her own with larger dogs and loved to out run everything in the dog park. My ex eventually got another IG and that dog was a nervous mess.

GildedRage · 24/01/2025 19:15

my dd solves the issue with lots and lots of run time. but is not reliable in the house for any length of time.

We have a whippet and an Iggy. It took us 8 days to house train the whippet and 8 years to house train the Iggy.
However, she is an adorable, affectionate and loyal little soul and we love her. She isn’t at all shivery and loves going for walks and tearing around fields.

I’ve known two. Both have had broken legs dueto falls indoors

i am veering back towards whippet which had been my first thought before Italian greyhound 😁

I've known 4 over the last few years and 3 of them have broken at least one leg. I can't comment on the other things you've asked about as not sure and they've all been lovely dogs but so so fragile

villainousbroodmare · 24/01/2025 19:30

All as fragile as fuck. I know one 2yo dog who is cared for like a precious infant, yet has broken three out of four of its legs doing normal things like getting off the sofa or down a few steps.
Plus require very skilled orthopaedics to fix.
A majority are brainless, needy and perpetually anxious.
Go back to the whippet plan.

Beesandhoney123 · 24/01/2025 19:31

I have a lurcher that is mostly Italian greyhound. He is v smart, very fast, very reactive and very clingy. He gets very cold
Otherwise he is gorgeous - he loves cuddles and is vocal.
He is very attached, despite living with other lurchers.

Possibly the lurcher bit helps. He is as fit and healthy as you could wish for. No weedy little legs:)

whiggypup · 24/01/2025 19:35

@Beesandhoney123 could we see a pic, I bloody love these types of dogs and mixes. Thanks 🙏

I have a iggy and a whippet x iggy, the gross is much more chilled and was easy to toilet traine. The iggy is like an anxious baby, can't sleep alone, likes to run about with other dogs but gets scared and pretends to be hurt. I'll never get another iggy, but I'd considered a whippet iggy cross. Full whippets are my faves.

The cross not the gross.. neither of them are gross.

We must have been lucky as - touch wood - our girl who is nearly 10 hasn’t injured herself yet.

SnarkSideOfLife · 24/01/2025 19:41

I have Seen some “wiggys “ for sale online so maybe that’s something to investigate.

Also here for pics. Grew up with a whippet.
She was perfection. The world's only chubby whippet.
