I have a 3 year old whippet
He was in the house running around fine and behaving normal.
Ate his dinner etc
Took him out(got to top of street ) and he started breathing really loud, like a barking cough sounds but wasn't coughing.
Anyway got him home and it stopped
Walking around, running around it's not happening
Could it be the cold ? It's 0. -1 here and freezing

He also walks sniffing the floor
So could he have inhaled something ?

Look up reverse sneezing. Could it be that?

nc43214321 · 11/01/2025 13:40

Could be kennel cough or some kind of virus he's picked out walking or reverse sneezing.

itssocoldd · 11/01/2025 13:40

@Lilgreygoose yes ! That's exactly what it sounded like
I didn't even know that was a thing

Reverse sneezing.
Absolutely shat myself when our whippet first did it after we adopted her 😅

Snippit · 11/01/2025 19:19

one of my dogs is so dramatic when he reverse sneezes, we just talk calmly to him until he stops, it does sound horrific.

I don't think it's anything to worry about in isolation. My dog had several episodes of reverse sneezing in a recent mantrailing session. He was sniffing heavily in iced conditions and also when I had used de-icer spray with him in the car. It sounds terrible but I think his nose was just irritated. I de ice the car before I put him in it now! But unless it's regular I wouldn't be concerned

My beagle does this a lot, if she gets a prolonged bout I cup my hand gently over her nose and mouth and it stops

muddyford · 12/01/2025 07:00

Sounds like reverse sneezing. My last Lab did it a lot as a puppy.

DamnedIfIDoDamnedIfIDont · 12/01/2025 07:14

Almost certainly reverse sneezing
my vet said to put one finger over one nostril and it will instantly stop. He also said it’s common and nothing to worry about

I think my border terrier does this - every time she has a drink. She's been doing it for years. I never knew what it was!
