Hello my fabulous Podsquad, here is Podcast Thread III.

For anyone that is new to this thread, it's about my rescue dog, known as Pod.

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

for if anyone would like to go back and see how astonishingly naïve and traumatised I was by taking on a fully grown, teenaged pointy dog who seemed determined to destroy me and everything I love.

Theatrics over, here is the Pod in question (obviously I've edited the lead out - I'm not mental).

If anyone doesn't have is Insta handle and wants it, just DM me. A video of me and Pod doing yoga together will appear at some point soon.

Oh Glorious Podface, you do make my heart sing :) (Work today, day of people being twats to and with their dogs. Ugh).

I dunno, I often ask the Stick Dog why she likes sleeping with her face in a bundle of (cheesey wotsit smelling) feet. She just looks at me all smug, like I'd even WANT to be able to do that!

HangingOver · 18/03/2025 10:56

I'm really worried about Pod.

I thought he was on the mend after a few days on his probiotic paste but he splatted all over the kitchen in the night again, poor darling. Have more paste and a pootube with instructions to collect three samples over three days.

He's lying down looking a bit sorry for himself although he ran for a whole hour last night so could be just tired. My poor little duck.

Oh poor bug. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon (no pun intended but once I saw it I couldn't bring myself to delete).

I'm so sad to hear that Pod is still poorly, it's such a worry when you know there's something making their tummy revolt (and revolting) but it takes your vet time/tests to find the right treatment 🤒

At least he seems to be feeling fairly ok if he's running around 😀

HangingOver · 18/03/2025 11:19

He met his best Pod Pal yesterday and they run each others legs off. She's the only Pod faster than he is so he absolutely loves chasing her through the trees. The Podsquad (Pod, GoFasterGirl, GentleBounce and Baby Pod) all now have matching light-up collars in different colours for evening walks so we can locate them easier 😅 I will deffo get a photo of them all sporting them at some point.

Crikey, I can imagine those pods going like the clappers in their collars - they must be an awesome sight!

Felicityjoy · 18/03/2025 11:58

Have you asked the kennels where he spent some time whether they know of any illness going round?

Yep I've dropped them an email about it and will let them know any test results we get too

Fingers x its not giardia... but I've a horrible feeling it might be.

It used to be pretty uncommon.. but I've come across SO many cases in the last few years and unfortunately kennels/daycares are fab places for it to spread.

HangingOver · 18/03/2025 20:30

They have said they've had a few upset tummies in the last week or so but they've resolved in a couple of days so it might be a red herring.

I've been reading about Giardi, hopefully it's treatable 😞

Morning from Poop HQ.

Poor DP was up four times in the night with Pod. We're on day 2 of poop sampling so the sooner we can get it off to the lab the better. I've given up on the chicken and rice - it doesn't seem to make any difference at all and he's starving the whole time. He's back on his plain kibble, probiotics and a little bit of plain porridge. I've been clearing up the splats, putting hot water and soap on them and covering them in soil. Feel really sorry for the poor boy. I've calculated food is going through him about 4 hours faster than usual so if I front load the day with his food them hopefully we'll all get a bit more sleep tonight. Urgh. Poop poop poop.

This might sound like rubbish advice, but I always swear by chappie for hounds with the squits 🙁

It isn't a food I'd ever thought I would be recommending, but it's the only food our poor girl could tolerate when she came home from the rescue, very underweight and traumatised. It's fish and rice based, so Pod's tummy might tolerate it.

Crossed fingers for a quick recovery 🙏

haggisaggis · 19/03/2025 13:27

You could try psyllium husks mixed in with his food. It was what our breeder recommended when dpup had the squits and it does work. I got some from Amazon but you can get it in health food shops too. A couple of teaspoons mixed in and then feed immediately. You might need to dampen the kibble a bit to mix it in.

I agree with Chappie for upset tummies. It’s easy to digest so we always keep a spare couple of tins in the cupboard in case of the squits.

Edited to say I’ve heard the original Chappie with fish is better than the Chicken one for upset tummies.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/03/2025 18:22

The original tinned chappie which was fish and rice, can tempt dogs to eat and originally, didn't really have many ingredients so it could work quite well.

However none of the other Chappie recipes have any particular reason to improve things for a squitty dog or tempt a dog off its food to eat, people have just passed on the idea that Chappie is some sort of miracle cure through the decades.

If it works for your dog, great - but theres no particular reason it would vs any other fish and rice based food or feeding just fish and rice or fish and mashed potato.

MaxandMoritz · 19/03/2025 18:29

My lurcher has needed antibiotics in the past as the paste didn't work at all and even on nothing but fish and rice she just got worse and worse.

Last time I managed to turn it around without any medication but kept her on the fish and rice for well over three weeks till I was completely sure it had cleared up.

Hope Pod recovers soon. It's no fun for anyone.

Nevertheless the fish Chappie has worked well for @LadyGrillingSole & myself when our dogs are poorly and it’s easy to buy/ keep in the cupboard so it’s an option for Hanging should they choose to try it.
