Are you walking your dogs in this weather?

Just that, really. We have lots of snow and it's due to get colder. He didn't get walked yesterday. Seems perfectly happy but I feel bad. Has access to garden for toilet, obviously.

I'd say it pretty much depends on what sort of dog it is. With a small short coated breed it's a different matter than if you have a husky or Livestock Guardian dog, which are very much outdoor dogs with a double coat. They tend to enjoy cold snowy weather.
Our girl got one walk yesterday and we got drenched because the snow had turned to rain, but I wouldn't judge someone for opting not to walk their dog, particularly if it's a smaller, less robust breed.

Edited for punctuation.

Scutterbug · 06/01/2025 09:58

Yes ours gets walked daily regardless of the weather.

LandSharksAnonymous · 06/01/2025 10:01

I'll walk mine in everything but snow - thankfully it's not snowed here yet.

I think theres a big difference between not walking your Italian Greyhound when it snows and not walking your Labrador or your Cocker Spaniel. It also massively depends on the conditions - snow that has de-frosted and then re-frozen when you live on a hill? No. Fresh snow when you live on flat land - yes, absolutely.

1 big walk and 2 toileting walks per day, rain or shine - golden retriever. Though he will sometimes just lie down in the mud to tell us he wants to go home when he's had enough.

Mybeautifuldogs · 06/01/2025 10:04

My Saint Bernard is living her best life in this and gets walked extra, my Yorkshire terrier, however, refuses, point blank, to go out.

AzurePanda · 06/01/2025 10:04

Mine get walked every day but if it’s very muddy we drive to a mud free walking area as I can’t face constantly bathing them all.

johnworf · 06/01/2025 10:06

I opened the patio doors early this morning and they both poked their noses out and were like 'no thank you. I think I'll go and wee on the landing'.

It's snowed again overnight here and about 5 inches deep - one dog is bichon and other small mixed breed.

twistyizzy · 06/01/2025 10:07

Yes. 1 x 2 hour + 1 x 30 min walk in snow drifts + blizzards yesterday. But she is a working dog (wcs) and used to being outside in all weathers. She thrives on it.
We are out twice a day 365 days a year unless it is very hot.

MagentaRocks · 06/01/2025 10:07

We have 2 collie crosses so need lots of walks. The only time we dont is if it is really stormy, as it freaks them out and if the weather is really hot and they are lethargic.

loveawineloveacrisp · 06/01/2025 10:08

He's a smallish poodle cross. Can be lazy and refuse to walk in bad weather.

Thanks for replies so far.

Our 6mo cocker had a good walk yesterday in the snow. Not as keen to take him out today since it's frozen solid so I'll make DH do it instead 🤣

Snoken · 06/01/2025 10:29

I live in a country where we have regular snow from October to April, of course dogs get walked in all weather and I don't even have a particularly hardy dog. A walk is so much more that just a toilet break for a dog. Mine loves sniffing out yellow patches in the snow and he wears a coat when it's below -5, but has been walked in -25, but only for a few minutes at a time when it's that bad.

Thesnoozingsighthound · 06/01/2025 10:32

If it’s bad weather such as torrential rain or snow we tend to follow their lead. Sometimes that means a walk wrapped in coats due to lots of energy or it means a day spent entirely under a blanket with some very reluctant toilet breaks in garden. We don’t miss 2 days in a row though.

biscuitsandbooks · 06/01/2025 10:35

Yes, but not for as long as he shivers constantly otherwise, even with a fleece jumper.

We're quite relaxed with walks though and skipped a couple of days over Christmas. He's absolutely fine without a walk unless it happens several days in a row (which has only happened due to injury).

bozzabollix · 06/01/2025 10:36

Yes, no snow here and would walk them even if there was. Labradors will go out whatever the weather.

PinotPony · 06/01/2025 10:38

I have two Labrador boys. In dry weather they get lots of long countryside walks. In wet weather, we pavement stomp around the block. If it’s torrential rain or bitterly cold, they go out in the garden.

2024riot · 06/01/2025 10:43

Our Labrador has been enjoying the weather although her eyes popped open in shock when she went for a short paddle and the water must have been extremely cold

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 06/01/2025 10:43

It’s my dog’s favourite time of year. She came back from a walk yesterday and instantly whined to be let out to play in the garden.

BigDahliaFan · 06/01/2025 10:46

It was pissing it down here yesterday, proper cold bordering on ice rain. The dog (she's 5) went out in the car with us to a relatively sheltered spot and had a walk in rain in her coat. She's spaniel sized and single coated.

I tried to take her out again in the afternoon and she point blank refused to get out of the boot.

She went out for 2 minutes for a street walk - wee - headed straight back in.

I managed to get her out in the garden for a wee before bed.

She knows her own mind.

We played some games with her toys and did a hid a treat game too. She just slept the rest of the time.

AelinAG · 06/01/2025 10:52

The corgi has to be walked twice a day regardless as he refuses to poop in the garden.
The Yorkshire terrier will not be moved from her blanket nest.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 06/01/2025 10:52

Yes, usual walks here in the snow, slush, ice, rain, whatever's being thrown at us. Our dog's a Patterdale cross so his terrier side is up for anything but the cross bit, which we don't know what it is, is a little neurotic and prefers creature comforts, so whilst he'll walk in all weathers, follows it up with a lot of napping and close-range cuddles.

RedHelenB · 06/01/2025 10:57

Yes. My dogs need their walk in all weathers

notacooldad · 06/01/2025 10:59

Ours love playing the snow.
We've were up on the fells with them yesterday
The oldest loved making dog angels!!

Enko · 06/01/2025 10:59

DDog loves snow so would 100% be out in snow. Smaller walk than usual.often but he is walked rain or shine. In the heat waves we had him up at 6 am for walks. He needs his walk.

Giggorata · 06/01/2025 11:00

Yes two working dogs, walked twice daily, whatever the weather. I must admit it is nearly always DH, who is a hero.
