Just that, really. We have lots of snow and it's due to get colder. He didn't get walked yesterday. Seems perfectly happy but I feel bad. Has access to garden for toilet, obviously.

Yup. Our cocker spaniel loves snow.

Seagullproofoldbag · 06/01/2025 21:01

No snow here at the moment, but in the past I have walked my Border Terrier across Dartmoor in the snow, he loved it. My miniature poodle enjoyed it too. I just dressed him in a knitted jumper with a waterproof trouser suit over the top. Snow sticks to poodle hair and they are inclined accumulate frozen lumps of snow on their legs.

Mrscharlieeeee · 06/01/2025 21:37

I have a miniature dachshund. I let her out for a wee yesterday, she ran straight back in and sat in her bed shaking. It's a no go in this weather. I tried this morning and she just sat in the patio and wouldn't move. We affectionately call her a fair weather pup.

2025willbemytime · 06/01/2025 21:40

Yes. Mine is a golden retriever and we've just had rain, wind and frost. She did get to see the snow at 3.30 in the morning and went out in it but it had all been rained away once we got up. I have finally got her a coat so I worry less but tbh it was to keep her clean as she doesn't like being washed. Bonus that it will help keep her cosy.

wavingfuriously · 06/01/2025 21:47

Yes, always walk the dog

I was going to start a thread about this actually. How on earth do people manage to be arsed to walk their dog(s) 2-3 times a day? EVERY DAY?! No matter what the weather, or how they feel/if they're ill etc, they HAVE to go out. I couldn't be arsed, really, and definitely not in THIS weather!

My parents had dogs, but we had an acre of land, and they could run around there, and didn't need walking 2-3 times a day. (They were taken some days, but they didn't have to be taken every day.)

THIS is really apt right now!

Dog owners vs cat owners... At 7.30am on a winter morning... 😆

Mine is a Pointer, I wouldn't like to see the state of my house if I kept him in all day! if you're dog is content then no shame in skipping it in this weather. He does wear an equa fleece and a raincoat on top if it's still falling.

TimeForATerf · 06/01/2025 22:00

Took the Labrador out today for a “short” walk in the snow. He loved it, zoomies everywhere. Ended up sneaking on the golf course which was deserted, I walked round the edge by the wall and he zoomed all over the green in the fresh powder. Stayed out over an hour.

I have a dog and two cats. The cat bosses me about more. The dog definitely loves me.

That's lovely for you. I would still rather have cats over dogs though. Couldn't be arsed with walking them 2-3 times a day no matter what the weather. No matter if I feel ill. No matter if I don't feel like it/have a very busy day.

Each to their own.

Mine are very good and will just go in the garden if need be. My lab would happily hurtle around in the snow. My little, long haired dog isn’t so happy. She gets great clumps of snow stuck in her coat. Sometimes I have to melt them off her legs in the sink. It’s been windy and wild here too, blizzards rather than flurries, so we’ve done the minimum.

ShineCow · 06/01/2025 22:04

Theperenniallaunderess · 06/01/2025 16:42

Our golden retriever loves the weather at this time of year and thinks it’s perfect for swimming. It has to be really quite cold to affect them (unless they are small!). The only thing to watch is if they have been walking on gritted roads to rinse their paws and undercarriage because the salt can cause a reaction.

Also antifreeze is lethal, if they lick it.

If you feel like you couldn't be arsed then you shouldn't really have a dog. Going for a walk should be a pleasure, not a chore. If you love your dog, you walk it, even when you're feeling crap.

My cat plots how to kill me every day. Sometimes she is almost successful (at the top of the stairs). She starts to pretend she loves me when I cook her chicken.

Definite psychopathic vibes from my cat. And eyes like a shark.

My dog is a bit of a loon but a very loveable one who loves nothing better than spooning on the sofa.

Bigcheeserolling · 06/01/2025 22:07

Yes, cocker spaniel. Three times a day whatever the weather. If he was a different breed I might not though.

DontshootmyRaptors · 06/01/2025 22:07

Yes we both( me and the dog) love a good walk. We are out at first light no matter what for at least hour.

DontshootmyRaptors · 06/01/2025 22:09

You have to be careful on the pavements though, because of thoughtless people who chuck anti freeze everywhere,

fivebyfivebuffy · 06/01/2025 22:11

etonmessedup · 06/01/2025 13:08

We have dachshunds, who notoriously hate the wet/cold.

Didn't even try yesterday in the snow. Just tried to take them out half an hour ago with damp ground/3c weather and they point blank refused. Didn't even get to the end of the street.

My friend has one
She will look out the window, huff, and then bury herself back in the duvet and ignore all attempts to get her out

This is why I bought a toy breed, 15 years of walking for 2-3h a day with big dogs has done me in 😱In the next year or two we'll be moving somewhere with 20+ acres and I will resume the big dogs, but for now I'm happy to have a pavement waddler

FastFood · 06/01/2025 22:58

He's walked everyday regardless of the weather since he won't do his business in the garden. We may ditch the daily long walk in the park if he had a very active day the day before, but that's about it, next day we're back to normal.
He's tiny and skinny, he doesn't like the cold, but he's insufferable if he doesn't have enough exercise. And I would be too I think.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 06/01/2025 23:15

Mine is 8kg, short haired, aged 14 with stage I kidney disease and arthritis. She just pootles around these days but she's almost always keen to go out. In this weather, though, she makes it very clear when she doesn't want to go and I just let her be. I think she's earned a bit of a rest by now.

My Border Terrier just one street walk today for half an hour. She isn’t keen in the cold. But it’s not enough. She was restless this eve. Need to get back to one park walk and one street walk per day.

creamsnugjumper · 06/01/2025 23:24

I wish we had snow, I have Bernese mountain dogs here desperately wanting snow walkies.

HappiestSleeping · 06/01/2025 23:29

Yes, walking my dog and my customers dogs. Have had to move fallen trees and all sorts to get to them, but so far, I have managed to get to everyone.

Miley1967 · 06/01/2025 23:31

We take our working cocker out regardless of weather but walks have been shorter the past few days and we have been very limited as to where we can walk due to local flooding.
