Are you walking your dogs in this weather?

Just that, really. We have lots of snow and it's due to get colder. He didn't get walked yesterday. Seems perfectly happy but I feel bad. Has access to garden for toilet, obviously.

All of our dogs have absolutely loved the snow! Even the greyhound diva. Unsure if our current rescue boy has ever experienced snow, and we haven’t had any yet, but he’s a big doofus so I’m sure he will also love it, if it ever arrives!

NetballHoop · 06/01/2025 11:08

Our short-haired terrier mix insists on a good walk whatever the weather and refuses to wear any kind of coat.

Starlight1984 · 06/01/2025 11:10

Yep - two working dogs here too. At least one big walk in the morning and then another in the afternoon (although when the weather has been particularly bad then we usually just extend the morning one so we don't have to go out twice).

What do you think people do in countries where it is cold / snowing / bad weather for months of the year??

Brooomhilda · 06/01/2025 11:10

I have a chihuahua so no. It wouldn't be safe for him and he'd hate it. Even bundled up he'd just be shivering and pulling to go home. He's getting lots of exercise running around with the toddler indoors and once it defrosts a bit we will resume.

Bigger dogs I imagine don't have these problems but struggle more in the summer!

Not out of our property boundary but I’ll get him out for some sniffy games in the garden a bit later.

KeenOtter · 06/01/2025 12:06

Yep always have walks (if hot we get up earlier)

Sideways snow and wind yesterday but the dogs love it and it means nobody else is out and about.

Some of the dogs are trained search and rescue dogs so need to work in extreme weather

Vettrianofan · 06/01/2025 12:08

Giant breed, walks in all weathers. Often just a plod around the block though.

Chocaholic1216 · 06/01/2025 12:09

I walk my German shepherd in all weather unless it’s that incredibly torrential rain/sleet where you can’t see one foot in front you. Luckily we only get that once or twice a year at most. If the pavements were like an ice rink with black ice I’d maybe reconsider too as I don’t drive to can’t take her elsewhere.

Sophiasguitar · 06/01/2025 12:11

He’s happy to go out in snow so we go. It’s rain he can’t deal with.

Northernbrightlights · 06/01/2025 12:12

Yes x3 yesterday. Deep snow where we are

BurntBroccoli · 06/01/2025 12:15

AzurePanda · 06/01/2025 10:04

Mine get walked every day but if it’s very muddy we drive to a mud free walking area as I can’t face constantly bathing them all.

The mud round here on the public rights of way is awful! One of my wellies got stuck yesterday - just got sucked in through the slushy snow with thick viscous mud underneath!
Was like those quicksand movies from the 70s (for those of a certain age!).

Adamante · 06/01/2025 12:16

Yes, he's walked no matter the weather. He'd be a total needy nightmare otherwise.

wetotter · 06/01/2025 12:17

No snow here!

But yes I walk her in snow - she has a double coat so doesn’t need to wear one as well, and seems perfectly happy.

We go out in nigh on anything, except hammering rain (which she hates), when it’s too damed hot (early morning only) and when there are severe wind warnings (generally unsafe)

BrokenWing · 06/01/2025 12:28

Yes, every day at least twice a day when a had our lab in rain and snow unless really wild (heavy rain and/or high wind). He loved the snow.

Good walking boots or wellies for grip on ice, long breathable waterproof warm coat, hat, gloves and you're, not glamorous but, good to go!

Certain short haired or toy breeds won't like it but gun dogs, spaniels etc are usually a hardy bunch.

thisoldcity · 06/01/2025 12:54

We have a golden retriever so this is his favourite weather - loves it on walks and keeps asking to be let into the garden just for a sniff and a sit down. Judging from how few other dog walkers we meet, a lot of people aren't walking in this weather.

etonmessedup · 06/01/2025 13:08

We have dachshunds, who notoriously hate the wet/cold.

Didn't even try yesterday in the snow. Just tried to take them out half an hour ago with damp ground/3c weather and they point blank refused. Didn't even get to the end of the street.

2024riot · 06/01/2025 10:43

Our Labrador has been enjoying the weather although her eyes popped open in shock when she went for a short paddle and the water must have been extremely cold

My 6 month old lab just did this! I've not really encouraged swimming yet because it's so cold, but she got quite a shock when she had to walk through a deep puddle.
And cried that she had to 😂

CoubousAndTourmalet · 06/01/2025 13:14

Just had a 45 minute walk in slushy wet snow (which was deep in places) and didn't come across any other dog walkers, which is unusual here... It looks as if a lot of folk aren't venturing out.

muddyford · 06/01/2025 16:05

Mine love it. We are doing our usual walks and they are sniffing everything' as normal. When we get back they are washed and dried and they snuggle down until suppertime.

DogInATent · 06/01/2025 16:06

loveawineloveacrisp · 06/01/2025 10:08

He's a smallish poodle cross. Can be lazy and refuse to walk in bad weather.

Thanks for replies so far.

Always offer them a walk. If they choose not to go beyond the front gate, turn around and come back in guilt-free.

bakewellbride · 06/01/2025 16:09

My greyhound gets walked 2-3 times every single day no matter what the weather is like.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 06/01/2025 16:09

Yes both of ours go out everyday. I've a foxhound x and a terrier x so pretty hardy dogs. They get given a cold shower before being let in the house too as we live rurally and it's very muddy at the moment. They've never once refused to go out.

TeeBee · 06/01/2025 16:09

Yep, three times a day.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/01/2025 16:12

Yep. 3-4 times a day if I can manage it but never less tjan twice, whatever the weather. She's getting on a bit and need the activity to get her bowels going - otherwise she'll be barking to go out at 3am for an untimely poo!
