Ear canal removal, any experience?

My dog has been plagued with ear infections his whole life, low, heavy ears, allergies and a love of swimming have all contributed.

his latest infection is resistant to pretty much all antibiotics and has destroyed his eardrum ☹️. We are trying to clear it but the vet has suggested that the only solution will probably be to remove both ear canals.

obviously this is major surgery, but after healing he will be pain free but also completely deaf. Has anyone had to decide on this surgery?

I've never heard of it in real life, but I saw it on an episode of Bondi Vets with a dog in a similar situation to yours.

Is it only the one ear that needs an operation or both?

Recurrent ear infections worry me because they are so close to the brain.

Neighbours had to do this with their dog. It cost a lot but the relief for the poor dog was unbelievable. He seemed to have a little residual hearing afterwards.

@UnhappyAndYouKnowIt I’ve just watched the clip on YouTube thanks for recommending it. There are positive comments from owners that have had the same op for their dog and it’s given me some reassurance. The dog in the clip was so much better afterwards.
