and I don’t expect it so soon.

DDog has oral cancer but I really thought he’d be ok over Christmas and we’d see how he was doing in the New Year.

I took him for a wander on Wednesday morning and he was happy. about 5 mins in he stopped for a poo and he seemed a bit stiff so we turned back home. By the time we got home he was limping really badly.

He already had a vet appointment booked for Wednesday evening (the steroid he was on were giving him side- effects so switched to an anti-inflammatory) and the vet gave him a feel and said the anti-inflammatory should help. But it hasn’t, he’s limping worse and now needs support to get up.
He’s still eating and bowel control is ok.

I’ve looked and he has an open sore on his paw but he’s had lots of surgery on his paw and he’s never been this bad. Going to make another vet appointment tomorrow but I think we might be at the end of the road.

While he could wander around and eat I felt like he had a quality of life but now he can’t even get up by himself.

need a bit of a hand hold.

I'm so sorry 😞 I don't believe there are any words which can help you, but I'll hold your hand.

I'm coming up to a year without my best friend, and although it has admittedly got easier, it still hurts, and the house is not the same. Like you, it was unexpected and very fast.

KeenOtter · 08/12/2024 13:24

Big hand hold here from me. It is such a difficult time Flowers The hardest thing to do but for him the kindest thing to do.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 08/12/2024 13:33

Handhold and a hug coming your way. It's hard seeing our wee pals in pain but you're doing everything you can for him.

Helladelinquent · 08/12/2024 14:22

Thanks all. Bailey is a 12.5 year old golden retriever so he was doing well age wise, its just still shit!

Just sending my support OP. You're doing the right thing by your lovely woofo. xx

SoMentallyDrained · 08/12/2024 21:16

How are you and Bailey this evening OP?

How are you and Bailey this evening OP?

He’s snoring and I’m sobbing! Had to keep it together for the kids. We decided not to tell them - they know he’s not well but not the extent. My girls are 11 and 7 and I had Bailey before I had them!

It’s done. I keep expecting to see him he was a big dog and we’ve a small house so he was always around.

I'm so sorry @Helladelinquent . You've done the best thing for a beloved member of the family. Sending so much sympathy. Totally understand the empty house thing, it's very hard.

OldTinHat · 10/12/2024 09:21

You've done the kindest thing in the world. I know your hearts are broken.

Be gentle to yourselves and cry as much as you need to.

Send you un-MNtty hugs.

Helladelinquent · 10/12/2024 09:41

It happened yesterday but I’m in bits this morning. I just miss him so much. I’m mostly holding it together for the girls (who were really upset as well. DH has surprised me by how upset he is - he’s usually quite stoic but he admitted that, even as we got to the vets, he just wanted to turn around and bring Bailey home.

I am so very sorry 💐

How lovely that he got to share his life with a family who loved him so much and had the strength to do the hardest thing at the best time. You will never forget him.

Sleep tight lovely boy 💜

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 10/12/2024 13:55

Oh lovely, that's so hard. It's the day that we all dread coming. Your wee doggie will be over the bridge and out of pain/discomfort. Be kind to yourself and know you did the best thing for your boy.

I'm so sorry. I have an old dog and dread that day. You've done the last and most selfless thing you could do for him though x
