Taking your dog out in bad weather/when it rains ALL day

This weekend the weather has been awfully windy and rainy. Currently its pouring. What do people say to staying in on either a sat or sun under such weather conditions? Y'day I was googling games etc to play with your dog when at home, it included some good mental stimulation games too. I have a hallway which I can throw a ball up and down and he runs to get it etc. Of course it's not very long.
I have not had a dog before.

We didn't go anywhere yesterday - we had 70mph winds and horizontal rain. I didn't do anything to entertain the dog though - he just chilled out and slept.

devildeepbluesea · 08/12/2024 07:31

I just go out. DDog won’t pee in the garden anyway, but he also hates the rain. We go out little and often. He has a couple of tuggy games inside, then a licky mat later on.

DustyLee123 · 08/12/2024 07:32

The dogs coat went on and he had two short walks. He won’t poo in the garden so needs to go out.

lovenotwar149 · 08/12/2024 07:33

Ok thanks. I took him on 2 short walks yday, when there was a 'somewhat' break in the rain. Today its pouring. My dog will pee/poo in the gardens thats ok

2 short walks and my dd brought her spaniel round so they wreaked havoc together in the living room.

Tara336 · 08/12/2024 07:34

I tried to take DDog out and he flatly refused to go we made it to the end of the drive then refused to budge so took that as a "thanks but no thanks"

lovenotwar149 · 08/12/2024 07:35

Tara336
thats interesting. My dog doesn't seem mind the rain ...not too much anyway. He def showed a little hesitance I think though

Me and my 4kg dachshund cross went out for two short walks yesterday - usually he would get 3 or 4 (and much longer.) He absolutely needs to get out the house a couple of times a day, even if each walk is just a 5 minute power walk round the block.

He has well fitting equafleeces so the only wet bit of him was his head, tail and paws and if he stopped or refused to go we would have come home/ not left.

The only time he flatly refuses to walk is when there is fireworks or when there is deep snow (but then that's because he has to snowplough through it!)

Enko · 08/12/2024 07:40

We walk him as usual if he wants. A walk
He doesn't always on a Saturday as be is often tired from doggy day care the day before. But he most certainly wants one on the Sunday if he skipped the Saturday walk. Usually first thing I'm the morning.

Weather doesn't matter to him he likes cooler weather and doesn't mind the rain.

Flatandhappy · 08/12/2024 07:41

Our dog hates the rain, when you let him out in the morning he sticks to the under cover area to pee if it is raining. Luckily as he is 13 he really is happy just being taken out for a very short walk as he likes to poo outside the garden. He then jumps back up on the sofa and goes back to sleep!

BeyondMyWits · 08/12/2024 07:41

Ours is 13 and set in his ways. We "take him out" twice a day whatever the weather as otherwise he throws a hissy fit and barks at the door until I get all dressed up, boots on (not an easy job for a fat 60 year old with dodgy hip, knees and arthritic hands).

Then we go outside and if it is raining , sometimes (in the past year) he'll pee at the kerb, turn around and go back in. We know he will. But if we don't do the whole rigmarole, he will bark and bark and bark until we do. (In that rhythm.... bark (and) bark (and) bark (and) bark....)

MissCherryBrandy · 08/12/2024 07:42

My dog is a Labrador and doesn't care about the weather. A bit wet and windy here but nothing unusual for us. We've been out as normal.

bozzabollix · 08/12/2024 07:42

My labs went out as usual round a very windy field. That’s all they did. I find it helps me to get out whatever the weather and as water dogs they couldn’t care less. The kids mucked about with them in the afternoon with indoor silliness.

bakewellbride · 08/12/2024 07:43

My greyhound needs the change of scene and exercise so goes out whatever the weather 2-3 times a day.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/12/2024 07:43

We have a Labrador who gives no shits about bad weather. He went out for both his walks yesterday, but his morning one was shorter so only 40 minutes, not an hour. He won't poo in the garden unless he's absolutely desperate.

Sounds like my husband. 😳

EdithStourton · 08/12/2024 07:47

Ours get walked as normal. The only thing we tend to do is avoid woodland during high winds.

They don't care about rain and cold, sleet or snow, and just love being out.

I'm an anti-social bugger at times, and quite enjoy terrible weather because you can sometimes go miles and not see a soul.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/12/2024 07:50

Walked as normal, with a coat on. He won't poo in the garden.

ThePure · 08/12/2024 07:52

Mine is a creature of routine and having a thick double coat he does not care about rain or wind. He wants his two walks a day come hell or high water and loud peremptory barking is deployed if I try to suggest otherwise. I'm just getting myself together to take him now although it looks foul.

I was surprised to see more dogs and owners than I normally do yesterday. All sticking to the open areas, so maybe they're normally out but in the trees!

However, it wasn't raining at that point. Rain + wind tends to make for a lonely walk!

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/12/2024 07:58

Dh took the dogs out briefly yesterday. They normally have a better walk. We have synthetic balls inside I can throw if needs must and my youngest has a toy she humps if very excited lol. The older dog tends to want to play with me. They also zoom around in the garden.

EdithStourton · 08/12/2024 07:59

@NoWordForFluffy it's rain that's the clincher.

Horizontal rain especially.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 08/12/2024 08:03

We still take ours out in bad weather, they cope with it better than we do tbh. 5 miles yesterday in the pissing rain was not fun for me. My dogs however enjoyed it immensely.

However there have been days I've not taken them out and they are equally happy snoozing on the sofa for the day.

As you said, there are lots of mental stimulation games you can play. I have 2x terriers and a foxhound and I often put treats around the house to let them sniff out which they enjoy, rolling up their food in towels to eat and scattering in the back garden keeps them amused for a while.

Same 😂. Well actually, he tried to get in the car, maybe he thought it wouldn’t be raining elsewhere! I tried to tell him the water that’s falling from the sky is the same water that he’ll be running wildly through later when it’s in puddle form, but he wasn’t having any of it 😂. He’s a Labrador so you’d think he’d be more hardy!

Yesterday, he mainly entertained himself by watching our outdoor Christmas lights swinging from the trees and barking at the letter box when it blew in the wind but I’m hoping it will subside a bit today so we can get him out.

BlackJacktheDog · 08/12/2024 08:08

We tend to still go out, just in good clothing and then come back and enjoy getting warm and dry again. But that's because I like going out - I'd rather get wet than stay indoors all day. There have been the odd days in his life when I've maybe been too sick to walk him, and he's been fine.

So if weather is not your thing and it really is a bit of an exception not to walk, then I'd not feel guilty for sitting it out.
