Taking your dog out in bad weather/when it rains ALL day

This weekend the weather has been awfully windy and rainy. Currently its pouring. What do people say to staying in on either a sat or sun under such weather conditions? Y'day I was googling games etc to play with your dog when at home, it included some good mental stimulation games too. I have a hallway which I can throw a ball up and down and he runs to get it etc. Of course it's not very long.
I have not had a dog before.

Waterproofs on and we go out for some shorter walks locally

Gsyllama · 08/12/2024 08:10

Well, as our behaviourist says, not going for a walk won't harm the dog and getting his rest is important. Playing some home treasure hunt games or other training can be good. However I get cabin fever and my dog is a winter loving dog, so we're more likely to go out anyway. The same rest principle applies to stressful days (for the dog) too, sometimes better to just skip the walk

Scottishskifun · 08/12/2024 08:24

My dog refuses to go out in the rain we set up mental challenges instead like finding treats under cups around the place

Velvian · 08/12/2024 08:32

Unless it's gale force winds, we go out. I'm wondering if it's too windy this morning, bit DDog will still want to go so we most likely will. Will stick to open areas.

Top tip, a peaked cap or a wool beanie under your hood. keeps your hood up and keeps you drier.

My dog is an American Akita who originates from the snowy, mountainous region of the same name in Japan. However, he hates walking in the rain and wind so he hasn't gone anywhere. Luckily he's also incredibly lazy. Didn't stop him waking me up to let him out and just stand there in it at 4am and 5am. Prick.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 08/12/2024 08:34

My dogs will go out in anything. I just wrap up warm and my DP has a nice bath ready when I get back 😀

Moonlightstars · 08/12/2024 08:36

Unless of course dangerous we always take out dogs out. Even if it's just for 2 half hour walks. We have wellies and waterproofs. We all get wet then come home and dry.
I thought everyone did!

Pasithean · 08/12/2024 08:36

Ours has mastered the practice of putting her bum out just over the doorway . No doormats here lol.

PuppyMonkey · 08/12/2024 08:41

My golden retriever won’t poo in our back garden so he generally has to go out a couple of times even in hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical storms etc. He’s good like that. Confused

BoobyDazzler · 08/12/2024 08:41

My scruffy lurcher is not a windy weather dog. He’s got no undercoat and his top coat is wiry and sparse so he gets chilled to the bone in the wind. He’d rather lay on front of the fire that go out on days like yesterday.

DitheringBlidiot · 08/12/2024 08:42

Unfortunately for me, my spaniel has no issues being outside in sideways rain. So I just took him out as normal.

DataPup · 08/12/2024 08:43

What do people say to staying in on either a sat or sun under such weather conditions?

I'd say be lead by the dog. If your dog hates the rain/wind/snow then stay at home, if they're still keen to go out then do that as long as it's not dangerous to do so.

We skipped our evening lead walk last night as one of ours doesn't like things flapping about in the dark but we'd done 5 miles in the day.

avaritablevampire · 08/12/2024 08:54

Decent waterproofs, but then again I loath being stuck inside, so generally I'm champing at the bit more than Ddog! If the wind is very severe, then no I don't go out as it's dangerous, so we just stand out in the garden away from the creaking trees, dog can still have a good sniff for bunnies and foxes, and getting some fresh air.

KeenOtter · 08/12/2024 09:03

We go out whatever the weather. I love the quiet from people but loud weather walks

Velvian · 08/12/2024 09:08

Ddog and I saw the same man and dog on both walks yesterday and not another soul.

We've noticed before (DH and I, not sure about Ddog😂) that all the usual dog walkers don't go out in the rain.

TourmaletAndCoubous · 08/12/2024 09:11

Yesterday our pup only got one walk instead of her usual three, she got absolutely saturated (double coated breed). I think I agree with being led by your own dog to some extent; our previous male hated walks in the rain, so if it was really bad all day he would choose to stay indoors and snooze. New pup (8 months) is female and seems pretty much oblivious to adverse weather, so we always have our walking boots and waterproof coats by the back door.

hiredandsqueak · 08/12/2024 09:28

We take a chance on a break in the rain, even a quick ten minutes around the block is enough for her to do what she needs to do. Had exh and dog round too so they had a spell of entertaining each other. Other than that she was happy to cuddle up with dd and chill.

FinallyMovingHouse · 08/12/2024 09:33

Dog coat and go!

Tess150 · 08/12/2024 09:33

It depends what dog you've got surely? A collie or springer spaniel isn't going to give a shit about the weather, they'll want their walks. A whippet on the other hand is more likely to be snuggling up on the sofa under a duvet with you.

EasyComfortDishes · 08/12/2024 09:35

We will often skip a day if the weather is awful. As it happens he had two long walks yesterday because of circumstances so may skip today. He doesn’t mind and has no behavioural issues. It’s not a big deal.

Sadcafe · 08/12/2024 09:36

Walks shorter and more likely to stick to paths rather than the fields but still go out, smaller dog wears a good rainproof coat, Labrador couldn’t care less

Notmanyleftnow · 08/12/2024 09:38

I walk mine in the rain.
But yesterday we were under a red storm warning, so we didn't go out other than the garden and that was fine.

BlackBean2023 · 08/12/2024 09:40

Another Labrador owner - we went out for an hour when the bad weather was 'less bad' yesterday.

Samesame47 · 08/12/2024 09:40

I just go out as normal, I have good winter weather clothing so the
doys go out for 2 walks a day as usual. I have spaniels they aren’t fair weather dogs, they need to run brain games don’t cut it with them. The only weather that gets us to deviate from routine is the heat, then they go out earlier in morning and late evening.

averythinline · 08/12/2024 09:42

The spaniel doesn't care... Probably slightly shorter walks than the norm and open ground...as more worried about trees

Moans more about the mud daddy and towel coat after but absolutely refuses any sort of coat/fleece so we have to put up with some amount of mud ...

Am tempted by the paw wash thing i see advertised on Facebook but DH just laughs and rolls his eyes..
