Taking your dog out in bad weather/when it rains ALL day

This weekend the weather has been awfully windy and rainy. Currently its pouring. What do people say to staying in on either a sat or sun under such weather conditions? Y'day I was googling games etc to play with your dog when at home, it included some good mental stimulation games too. I have a hallway which I can throw a ball up and down and he runs to get it etc. Of course it's not very long.
I have not had a dog before.

Mine is a small hairy 13 year old and loves the cold and wind, although, nowadays she likes her coat on in the cold and rain.

She's always in and out of the garden all day, regardless of rain or wind, just having a wander and sniff - happy to wee and poo in the garden - yesterday we put on our waterproofs and had a good walk, as we do every day, but today, for some reason, we didn't end up going out - probably more to do with the fact that I'm feeling tired today, than anything to do with the weather.

She likes to sit by the open back door to cool off as, I think, the house can be a bit warm for her, something I try to discourage as all the heat goes out at the same time.

I did briefly mention the idea of a walk about 30 minutes ago but, perhaps, picking up on my lack of enthusiasm, she didn't seem bothered. I didn't push it.

It's dark, cold and wet now, so we're staying in.

We have a GR that won’t poop in the garden so needs a walk…..but the WCS said absolutely no to a walk in the wind and rain!

I'm surprised the dog brigade is not out in full force telling people that you shouldn't have a dog if you're not walking them 10 miles a day even in the pissing down rain and 70mph 🫢

My dog can go 24h without a proper walk, but beyond that, if the weather is still horrible, we'll just go with it. He hates the rain and the wind but I hate him when he lacks exercise even more!
He protests at the beginning of the walk but once we're in the park, he doesn't seem to care anymore. And the nap afterwards is bliss.

I like walking in bad weather so I made sure my dog was slowly exposed to worse and worse weather as a pup and it was still a really cool thing so she’s not fussed. Often weather can turn on a long walk too especially on the coast so it was important to me she could cope with that.

Haha yes, they normally do pop up on these threads. Often telling people that it's cruel if they don't walk their dogs at least three times a day too 😂

Took our lab out twice a day during this weekend’s stormy weather. It wasn’t that nice, so walks were slightly shorter than usual. Dog was physically pulling me home in one walk because he wasn’t best pleased, although he’s usually okay in rain.

BigDahliaFan · 10/12/2024 14:29

We'll still go out 99% of the time, though it can be a challenge as we live somewhere wet and windy - and she has no interest in just going round the block if it's raining.

But it'll be a shorter walk and then a few more games at home. She's 5 so she's fairly chilled and if needs be would sleep most of the day and just pop in the garden to do her business. So for a particularly bad couple of days like we just had she wasn't out much at all.

We got out in everything unless it's dangerous - I stay in during really high winds and when it's sheet ice. He gets annoying without walks, even though he's an old man and we do training, find etc games in the house. I was hoping he'd decide it was too wet the other night when the rain was sideways but it didn't bother him at all... sigh. On the positive, the rain gives him a wash and makes him super fluffy (he's a big rescue who won't do baths).

I took my dog out for a quick walk on Saturday but it was slightly scary as the wind was so strong.

He's a complete PITA without a walk.

The only time I don't walk him is if there's a heatwave (will walk very early and very late though.)

40yrs ago I was given the advice to NOT walk the dog at least one day in a month. Get them used to the fact that they do not always go out as it makes dealing with illness - yours or theirs - so much easier.

I've always done this so my dogs tend to just give a look of resignation if we have a "duvet day". If they need to be on enforced rest they do not climb the walls.

Fireworknight · 11/12/2024 14:34

We never have a prescribed time, so the morning walk can be anytime from eight o’clock or start at ten. Similarly with the evening walk, sometimes its before he eats, sometimes afterwards.
