Sorry for asking here!! I've not had a dog before so I don't know what is usual or when I should be worried really...

Ok my DH who is much less panicky than me reckons he seems ok and we will just keep an eye on him for now. Poor baby 🙁

@YorkshireFelix Ahh poor V! Raw or cooked egg? It doesn’t matter really but if he’s never had a raw egg before it could have been that – pupsy didn’t like them for a while but does now.

I wouldn’t call the vets but others may be more cautious. If it was pupsy I’d probably offer some plain food in case she got the hunger voms, and then see how she got on during the afternoon, as we can often get after-work vets appointments last minute. If all ok this afternoon I’d just monitor and give cuddles.

Something similar happened here fairly recently – she chucked her breakfast up randomly one day and so I just gave her some scrambled egg to settle her tummy and she promptly slept it off. She had no other symptoms so I didn’t bother the vet.

Yes it was a raw egg so I think maybe it could have been that. I'm cooking some plain rice and will give him a small amount.

I feel so bad for him because he can't tell me he feels sick but I am just soft. My dd says all the time 'what if he has a headache and he can't tell us' 😭😭😭

OP posts:

I keep saying he looks sad and DH says he doesn't he just looks the same as usual hahaha

@YorkshireFelix Could well have been the egg then! I often give pupsy raw eggs now or half of one if I’ve used it for brushing pastry or whatever, but she didn’t ‘get’ them for ages. I remember a similar occasion with cream cheese which now she can’t get enough of. I think their tummies evolve as they get older.

Hahah of course he looks sad, the poor baby!! DH is simply wrong. The idea of them having a headache and not being able to communicate is the sweetest thing, and I will now be thinking that all the time!

@CoubousAndTourmalet the snow just arrived over here! It's coming down thick again.

Awww, no @YorkshireFelix , poor little Vinny, that's rough. I'd agree it's likely the egg. Hopefully it won't last long.

We generally just stick with a handful of dry kibble after they've been sick.

Strangely - in regard to what your daughter said, we're almost certain that Rosie did suffer headaches or migraine. I'm sure all the vets and dog experts here would tell me it's nonsense, but she sometimes had days when she'd be a bit off her food and hold her head down or lie with her head tilted to one side.

Anyway, get well soon Vinny x

Nella68 · 07/01/2025 16:41

@YorkshireFelix Midge was unwell with vomiting a couple of months ago. He didn’t want to drink which was the most concerning. I syringed 20mls of water every 10 mins. I rang the practice and was advised to take him in. The vet saw him and could hear bowel sounds. He was having bowel movements and I was pretty sure he hadn’t eaten anything like a sock/ bone that could have caused a bowel obstruction.
He slept for about 24 hours and was fine the next day.

I hope he gets well soon x

CoubousAndTourmalet · 07/01/2025 16:45

More snow here. We've just had a long circular walk from home across the big field. We both had our Winter Trax on over our walking boots and I properly road tested my new coat. It ticks all the boxes for winter dog walks: long, warm, waterproof, decent fleece lined hood that stays on.
It's been ages since I've walked in snow, it's definitely woken my leg muscles up!

YorkshireFelix · 07/01/2025 16:46

Aww thanks everyone. He has perked up a bit now and loved the rice - he wagged his tail the whole time eating it! He's just dragged his blanket through the to kitchen to lie down at DH's feet whilst he's working and is no longer doing his sad face.

@CoubousAndTourmalet awwww I would totally agree re the headaches too! Poor girl 🥲

@YorkshireFelix Bill had something similar a few months back - kept being sick, couldn't keep down water. I panicked and took him to the emergency vet. Cost a fortune and they gave him an anti-sickness jab that caused him so much pain it nearly broke my heart. And to be honest, by the time we'd got to the vet, he was able to drink water again so probably would have been fine, but he's my first dog and I didn't know what to do. They thought it was probably a virus. I still think I did the right thing then, because it might not have been, and he was only tiny at the time. If Vinnie's okay in himself I'd just keep a wary eye on him and try to get some water in him, and some probiotics if you've got them in the house.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 07/01/2025 16:52

I was going to mention that @Bupster , I remembered it because Brie had a "virus" a few days after Bill but with her it came out the other end. We had a vets trip and got probiotic paste.

YorkshireFelix · 07/01/2025 17:35

@Bupster I think I remember him being ill actually! It's so hard when you've not had a dog before. I would be devastated if anything happened to him but also don't want to take an expensive trip to the vets when it's not needed. He is all good now so I'm glad DH was about to be reasonable 😄

Have been away and haven't read everything but just wanted to say Bear had a v similar thing after a raw egg and was fine a couple of hours later.
Vets have said to me in the past to call if dog isn't drinking or seems v lethargic. It is so hard to know though!

CoubousAndTourmalet · 08/01/2025 11:22

Good Morning Folks,

Minus five and thick fog here, which is lovely 🙄

I hope Vinny is doing okay this morning @YorkshireFelix

Bupster · 08/01/2025 11:48

There was me thinking we had cracked it and we'd get Bill's recall back in a few weeks. NOPE.

Little bollocks spotted a jay or something similar, which took off and did circuits of the enclosed lawn we were walking on and the adjacent bloody car park, with Bill following in sheer joy, while I called and whistled to no avail like a complete idiot. Every time he came past me I tried to stand on his line but we're using a waterproof one and it's got no bloody grip. I had twelve heart attacks in five minutes - thank God it was early and there were no cars moving around (though in fairness I wouldn't have let his line trail if there had been).

ARG I could have murdered him, and now I'm just feeling incredibly guilty, and we have to go back to first principles again, and I'm hoping I've not poisoned the whistle as he completely ignored it today.

I'm exhausted today anyway - I woke up exhausted, and I'm just bumping-into-walls tired. Please God this gets easier soon.

@YorkshireFelix how's Vinnie?

YorkshireFelix · 08/01/2025 13:44

@Bupster eeee god how frustrating! It's scary when they do that and it feels like it goes on forever even though it's only 5 minutes.

I was going to get a waterproof longline as I think we need to do the same with Vinny but I'll stick with the fabric one I think... Also need a new harness as he was tiny when we bought one and haven't used it for a few months.

To be fair, you did all the right things having him on a longline etc, it's just unfortunate that you couldn't grip it due to the material. I'm not sure there's much else you could have done.

He is right as rain today, thank you (and also @CoubousAndTourmalet for the well wishes). He gobbled up his rice last night and had a good sleep, and is back to being a menace and barking at everything today. AND he destroyed a toy for the first time!! I spoke to soon yesterday 🤣

OP posts:
CoubousAndTourmalet · 08/01/2025 13:48

Awww, glad to hear V has recovered @YorkshireFelix

The toy wrecking must be a thing at this age...🙄

Nella68 · 08/01/2025 14:07

@Bupster I feel your pain!. Midge has turned his ears off too. I had him off lead at the local woods today and he was bumbling around nearby when he spotted one of his dog friends and he was off. The other dog follows his owner and is pretty good at disengaging from other dogs, so as he went after his owner Midge galloped off too. He went out of sight near the road but eventually I heard him come crashing back. It did scare me though.
I’ve got a waterproof line and have had it slip from my foot. I’ve tied a few knots down the length at intervals and that helps.

@YorkshireFelix glad to hear Vinny is feeling better!

brushingboots · 08/01/2025 14:30

@Bupster I’m sure you haven’t poisoned the whistle, don’t worry about that. I suspect I might know where you were walking and if I’m right that carpark always gives me the heebies. Yes, you probably do need to go back to first principles but it all sounds quite textbook adolescence so don’t be cross with either him or yourself, he’s just being a teenage boy and he will grow out of it.

@YorkshireFelix Glad V is feeling better!

I’ve been interviewing gundog trainers today for work and one of them has 20 dogs! I think that’s the largest team I’ve come across yet. It has rather put everything in perspective for me with my one and only dog today. Here she is thinking about ice-skating this morning.

Thanks both!

@brushingboots 20 dogs is wild. I can't even comprehend how you would manage that many dogs. How do you remember all their names 😂

Bupster · 08/01/2025 17:06

Over on the Podcast someone just described teenage boy dogs as “nobby behaviour followed by anxious needy-fuckery” thanks to fluctuating testosterone and it’s like they’ve been sat in my wheelie bin watching us 😄😄

YorkshireFelix · 09/01/2025 12:02

Our village is still all solid thick ice on the roads and pavements and dd's school is still closed. Poor Vinny hasn't had a decent walk since Sunday. DH took him out for a short walk on Tuesday before it snowed and iced up again.

To be fair he is being pretty well behaved considering. We've been doing some games with him and I've just taught him 'middle.' I only had to show him once then he got it straight away! It blows my mind how clever he is.

I am praying for this bloody ice to fuck off ASAP as I feel like we are all going mad!
