Puppy with possible liver shunt - handhold please

DaftNoodle · 02/11/2024 13:06

My 7 month puppy was admitted into the emergency vets this morning. Initially they thought poisoning but now suspect a liver shunt.
I've googled and scared myself, he was so poorly so suddenly this morning. Does anyone have any experience of this in their dog? I'm beside myself with worry.
Thank you in advance x

What a shock for you this morning.

We had a foster puppy that had a genetic liver shunt it was corrected by surgery and the dog is still having a good fun life 7 years on.

Such a worry for you but your puppy is in the right place.

Thank you so much @KeenOtter that's such a relief to hear your pup is doing so well. Really appreciate your post.

Really hope it's good news, @DaftNoodle! As KeenOtter has proven, it's not always a worst case scenario and I hope for you that it isn't!

Thank you @Killingoffmyflowersonebyone just trying to keep positive x

Any news on your little boy @DaftNoodle?

DaftNoodle · 03/11/2024 07:40

I was allowed to visit him last night and he'd perked up a bit and his little tail was wagging bless him.
The vets have been so lovely and hope if he continues to improve over the night he can come home today and we have an appointment tomorrow with a vet specialist.
Keeping everything crossed and trying to keep myself busy while I wait for a call xx

KeenOtter · 03/11/2024 08:56

Just checking in to see how things were going. Fingers crossed he comes home today

DaftNoodle · 04/11/2024 07:04

Thanks so much everyone for your kind messages.
He came home but then took a turn so ended up back on an IV last night in the vets.
I'm picking him up this morning and taking him to see the specialist and have a scan. So hopefully we'll get some answers today.
Keeping everything crossed for the little fella xx

Oh bless him, I’m keeping everything crossed for some answers from the specialist and a treatment plan that works quickly.

KeenOtter · 04/11/2024 08:36

Everything crossed here.

DaftNoodle · 04/11/2024 12:16

Thank you all so much.
He was very poorly this morning and got taken straight into ICU as soon as I arrived. They are hoping to be able to scan him this afternoon if he's stable enough and then we'll have a diagnosis hopefully.
Just trying to keep positive and know he's in the best place xx

How's he doing OP?

Best wishes

DaftNoodle · 08/11/2024 10:25

@seedsandseeds he's home bless him and doing well. We've got a surgery consult in a few weeks and he's on a soya diet and meds until he gets a bit bigger and they can operate.
Thank you to everyone for their kind words and wishes on this thread. Just so happy to have him home xx

Best of luck for the future.

Sorry to crash. My 5 month old puppy has symptoms of a shunt. We are doing a fasting blood test today to check for acid bile markers. I'm so so worried. The vets indicated they didn't have the imaging to do a proper ultrasound too so would likely need referral if the markers are up. My DCs have got so attached to the dog they will be distraught if he has to be PTS and so near Xmas. I'm so so so worried 😥

KeenOtter · 13/11/2024 10:58

@bubonic I can understand your concern but there are many levels to a liver shunt and not all have a negative outcome. So easy to say but do try not to concentrate on the worst scenario it may not be one you have to deal with.

DaftNoodle · 19/11/2024 19:48

@bubonic sorry I've only just seen your post.
How is your pup doing? X
Mine is doing well on medical management and has gained 1kg in 2 weeks which is good. I had a consult with the surgeon today and the shunt is a large one and inside the liver rather than going around it so surgery is more complicated. So a lot to consider at the moment.

bubonic · 20/11/2024 12:06

Oh I do hope your pup is going to be ok! From what I've seen surgery is better long term? It's such a shame we can't do liver transplants on the little fluff balls.

Blood tests for mine came back clear so we were referred to neurology as they think he has some kind of tumor or lesion. We are going to see what the scans tell us.

DaftNoodle · 20/11/2024 17:09

Bless you it's such a worry isn't it especially when they're so little. Keeping everything crossed for you and your pup xx
